'Maharaja' to release in China. (X)
Vijay Sethupathi’s last release Maharaja (2024) will be released in China on 29 November. Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, the Tamil film captivated theatre audiences and also significantly impacted the digital platform.
China has been a huge market for Indian films in the last decade. Especially Aamir Khan’s Three Idiots (2009), Dangal (2016) and Secret Superstar (2017) have become a major success in China in recent years.
However, in the last four years, amidst the tensions between the two countries, no Indian film was released for the Chinese audience.
According to the news agency PTI, Maharaja — which is titled Yin Guo Bao Ying in Chinese — will be the first Indian film to be screened in China after both countries firmed up an agreement on patrolling and disengagement of troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, in a major breakthrough to end the over four-year border standoff.
#Maharaja is all set to hit the China screens on 29th November

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at their meeting in Kazan in Russia on the sidelines of the BRICS summit on October 23 endorsed the agreement and issued directions to revive various bilateral dialogue mechanisms and normalise ties that were hit by a deadly military clash in 2020 at Galwan Valley.
The story follows a barber, played by Sethupathi, who embarks on a quest for vengeance after a burglary at his home. The plot thickens when the barber reports the theft of “Lakshmi” to the police, leading to confusion about whether “Lakshmi” is a person or an object. This intriguing narrative, paired with Sethupathi’s powerful performance, has resonated strongly with viewers.
Maharaja also features notable performances from Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Divya Bharathi, Abhirami, and Singampuli. Nithilan Saminathan’s direction and the ensemble cast’s performances have brought a fresh, compelling story to life.
Released in June 2024, the movie quickly became a blockbuster by grossing over ₹100 crore globally. Maharaja made its digital debut on Netflix on 12 July and garnered 18.6 million views ever since.
