Accessibility features

Audio description is the narration of the visual elements in a video, such as gestures, facial expressions, and objects. It’s used to help people who are blind or have low vision understand the plot.

While, closed captions are a written track of the dialogue and other sounds in a video, such as breathing or coughing. They’re used to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing understand what’s happening in the video.

These features are common in content available on OTT, but to be included in a theatre release is a first for a Tamil movie.

According to a Cinema Express report, the audio descriptions feature will be delivered through the Moviebuff Access application and will be available in theatres that have the required setup. A list of such theatres is expected to be released shortly.

The Union government in March 2024, in a press release issued guidelines for accessibility standards in the public exhibition of feature films in cinema theatres.

In the guidelines, the government advised all feature films to have at least one accessibility feature each for the hearing impaired and visually impaired—closed captioning and audio description.

Previously, the Hindi film Srikanth (2024) was released with audio descriptions. The film was about a visually impaired person and his story of success.

Vettaiyan also features Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, and Ritika Singh. The film was shot across several locations in South India and Mumbai.

The Tamil movie features music by Anirudh Ravichander, marking his fourth collaboration with Rajinikanth.

The technical team also includes cinematographer SR Kathir and editor Philomin Raj.
