The Academy honours the screenplay of Raayan

Raayan, directed by and starring Dhanush, has achieved a significant milestone with the selection of its screenplay for inclusion in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences library.

Sun Pictures, which backed the film, announced this on its X handle on Friday, 2 August.

Previously, the screenplay of Parking (2023), starring Harish Kalyan, Indhuja, and MS Bhaskar and directed by Ramkumar Balakrishnan, was also selected for the Academy’s library.

Being included in The Academy’s Library highlights the cultural and social significance of the screenplay of Raayan.

The Oscar Library’s collection spans various types of films, not just award winners or blockbusters. While inclusion in the Academy’s library is an honour, it does not guarantee awards or additional recognition.

Raayan had a strong debut with a wide release on 26 July. Although it faced some criticism for its violence and gore, the Tamil film garnered positive word of mouth from audiences and achieved notable box office success.

Entering its second week, Raayan grossed ₹112 crore globally within seven days. According to Cinetrak, the film earned approximately ₹5 crore on its seventh day, bringing its total to ₹112 crore.

Did you know that Vishnu Vishal was initially linked to the project? In June 2023, reports emerged that the actor was considered for a role in Dhanush’s 50th film. However, Vishnu Vishal later clarified on X that he couldn’t join the project due to prior commitments, despite his interest.

Though he didn’t specify the film, it was widely understood to be Raayan. It is rumoured that Vishnu Vishal was intended for the role that eventually went to Sundeep Kishan.

Vishnu Vishal was seen latest in Lal Salaam (2024). The film was directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth and was a box-office dud.

Raayan, Dhanush’s 50th film as an actor and second directorial venture, is a gangster drama centred on three brothers played by Dhanush, Kalidas Jayaram, and Sundeep Kishan.

The cast also features Selvaraghavan, SJ Suryah, Dushara Vijayan, Aparna Balamurali, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Saravanan, and others.

Raayan is a fiery spectacle where intense and high-energy action sequences, choreographed by Peter Hein, erupt with explosive force. Making a mass film while preserving its aesthetics is an art, and Dhanush has approached the film with exceptional care and dedication to both his audience and his love for cinema,” read our review.
