Sudha Kongara apologises for confusing Phule with Savarkar

Award-winning director Sudha Kongara, acclaimed for Suriya-starrer Soorarai Pottru (2020), faced disappointment with the Hindi remake Sarfira.

Despite positive reviews, Sarfira failed at the box office. During its promotional campaign, Sudha Kongara made a speech blunder that sparked significant backlash, for which she has since apologised.

In a recent interview with Cineulagam, Sudha Kongara discussed her eagerly awaited film Purananooru, where she once again collaborates with actor Suriya. Addressing the delays, she explained that the film’s subject is deeply personal, describing it as an “anti-oppression film.”

The filmmaker added that it resonates with her and reflects her ideology. She also mentioned her background in history, noting that nationalist VD Savarkar worked to empower women in education.

Sudha Kongara noted that VD Savarkar supported his wife’s education despite societal criticism.

However, this story pertains to Jyotirao Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule, renowned educators and reformers who worked to educate Dalit, tribal, and OBC women.

Sudha Kongara faced severe criticism for confusing Jyotirao Phule with VD Savarkar. The filmmaker has since apologised on her X account.

In her post, she explained that her comments were based on what she learned from a teacher at 17 and apologised for not fact-checking them beforehand.

Sudha Kongara acknowledged her mistake and thanked those who corrected her. She concluded with a salute to Jyotirao Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule.

The director Kongara extensively promoted her latest release Sarfira, starring Akshay Kumar.

Soorarai Pottru and Sarfira are inspired by GR Gopinath’s memoir “Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey“, and depict the journey of a man who aimed to create affordable airlines for low-income passengers.

In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Sudha Kongara discussed her affinity for underdog stories. When asked if Purananooru would be her next film, she neither confirmed nor denied it but clarified that her next project would be a Tamil movie.

Purananooru, Suriya’s 43rd film, was expected to focus on the anti-Hindi riots. The initial cast included Vijay Vara Varma, Nazriya Fahadh, and Dulquer Salmaan.

However, rumours surfaced suggesting that the film might be on hold, with some speculating that Suriya may have exited the project. The makers have not yet clarified the film’s status or plans.
