The latest Malayalam movie Manjummel Boys is winning more hearts by the day. Released on 22 February, it is flying high by raking in over ₹110 crore worldwide.

Directed by Chidambaram, the film is a survival drama about a group of 11 friends who visited the Guna Caves in Kodaikanal in 2006 and met with a tragic accident.

Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan, Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap and Tamil directors Karthik Subbaraj, Venkat Prabhu, and Gautam Vasudev Menon praised the flick.

The latest celeb to join them is Superstar Rajinikanth. Director Chidambaram organised a special screening for Rajinikanth and the latter was all praise for the movie.

Interestingly, Manjummel Boys surpassed the collection of director Aishwarya Rajinkanth’s Lal Salaam, where Rajinikanth did an extended cameo role.

Manjummel Boys pays tribute to Kamal Haasan’s cult film Guna (1991).

Kamal Haasan watched it at a special screening in Chennai and appreciated the team. He was also impressed with the placement of the “Kanmani Anbodu” song in the Malayalam flick.

“Love doesn’t exist only between a man and a woman. ‘Mohabbat‘ is also meant for friendship,” the veteran actor said, during an interaction with the Manjummel Boys team.

Houseful shows

Meanwhile, Manjummel Boys is running to packed houses in both Kerala and Tamil Nadu, as there are no major releases charted this month.

The film was released in Tamil Nadu at a time when the industry had been witnessing a dull season.

It was initially released in 43 centres and word-of-mouth publicity helped it pull audiences to the theatres. Eventually, the screen count rose to 220.

It witnessed an unbelievable response in Tamil Nadu and became the first Malayalam movie to collect over ₹20 crore at the Tamil box office.
