Malavika Mohanan plays a sorceress in Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan, sporting dreadlocks, body tattoos, wig and makeup.
At a press conference, she shared the toll this role took on her, revealing she had to consult five doctors during the shoot, according to Onmanorama.
Malavika Mohanan said after a long outdoor shoot in Kolar, she had to visit at least five doctors to recover.
“I visited at least five doctors, including a dermatologist and an ophthalmologist. The makeup process took four to five hours, and I developed rashes after wearing it for 10 hours. We were also heavily exposed to the sun during the shoot. You don’t notice it at the time, but later you see burn marks.”
Malavika Mohanan mentioned that Ranjith had her ride a buffalo for a scene in Thangalaan. The actor revealed she wasn’t prepared for a scene with a buffalo.
She recounted, “I was getting ready to shoot when I saw the buffalo. Ranjith sir asked if I liked it. When I said yes, he told me to sit on it. I thought he was joking, but he repeated it. I was taken aback since he hadn’t mentioned the scene in advance.”
Thangalaan, featuring Vikram in the lead, is a period film about displaced Tamils on the margins of society, with the challenge of capturing the language and slang, explained writer Azhagiya Periyavan in an interview.
He added that the story focuses on native Tamils and those from northern Tamil Nadu, requiring extensive research on 18th-century Tamil and its slang.
Based on a real story set in the Kolar Gold Fields during British rule, Thangalaan, has been in production since 2022.
The film stars Parvathy Thiruvothu, Pasupathy, Daniel Caltagirone, and Harikrishnan Anbudurai. It has music by GV Prakash Kumar, cinematography by Kishor Kumar, and editing by Selva RK. Tamil Prabha co-wrote the screenplay.
Produced by KE Gnanavel Raja under Studio Green and Neelam Productions, Thangalaan will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.
Thangalaan has cleared censorship and received a U/A certificate from the CBFC. It will be released alongside Prashanth’s Andhagan, Keerthy Suresh’s Raghu Thatha, and Arulnithi’s Demonte Colony 2.
