Vijay Sethupathi’s latest film, Maharaja, has rejuvenated Tamil cinema and ended a long slump at the box office.

Directed by Nithilan Saminathan of Kurangu Bommai (2017) fame, the film also featured Anurag Kashyap, Manikandan, Sachana Namidass, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan Subramaniam, Abhirami, Singampuli, and Munishkant in important roles.

The 50th milestone film of Vijay Sethupathi hit the big screens on 14 June. It garnered mostly positive reviews but also faced criticism for its handling of sexual violence, which was deemed insensitive.

By its third weekend, Maharaja grossed ₹100 crore worldwide, establishing itself as the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year, surpassing Sundar C’s Aranmanai 4 (2024).

Despite facing competition from Prabhas’s highly anticipated Kalki 2898 AD, released on 27 June, Maharaja has maintained its strong hold in theatres.

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Maharaja amassed approximately ₹76 crore in India and around ₹24 crore internationally. This achievement has propelled the film, ahead of the previous top-grossing Tamil movie of the year—Aranmanai 4, which concluded its global run with ₹99 crore.

We hear Maharaja should reach around ₹105 crore by the end of its theatrical release.

The film explores the intricacies of the father-daughter bond, highlighting its challenges and emphasising the importance of love and understanding in overcoming obstacles.

Vijay Sethupathi on his personal life

Vijay Sethupathi, known for keeping his personal life private, opened up in a recent interview about his relationship with his children—a daughter and a son.

The actor recalled how his experiences as a parent shaped his character in Maharaja. “I cherish my daughter deeply, affectionately calling her ‘amma’ (mother) and my son ‘appa’ (father). I regularly interact with them, discussing scenes before I head to shoots.”

Vijay Sethupathi added that he feels responsible regarding his chosen films and values his children’s input. “I don’t always present myself as a father figure; sometimes, I’m the one learning,” he admitted.

Netflix acquired the streaming rights for Maharaja. The film is expected to drop on the platform in mid to late July. However, we await an update from the OTT giant.

Upcoming projects for the actor include Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai Part 2, a Disney+ Hotstar series directed by M Manikandan, and Mysskin’s Train. Vijay Sethupathi previously collaborated with Manikandan on Aandavan Kattalai (2016) and Kadaisi Vivasayi (2021).
