Bhavatharini, daughter of veteran music composer Ilaiyaraaja, passed away on Thursday, 25 January. The 47-year-old musician died in Sri Lanka where she was undergoing treatment for cancer.
Remembering his daughter, Illaiyaraaja posted a Black-and-White photo of him with Bhavatharini. Dropping the picture on social media, the musical maestro wrote: “Dear Daughter…”
In the photo, Illaiyaraaja and her daughter are seen checking an album. The musician sports a headphone.
The emotional post moved the netizens and Ilaiyaraaja fans.
Bhavatharini had been unwell for the past five months. She went to Sri Lanka to undergo Ayurveda treatment for cancer. She passed away at 5.30 pm on 25 January.
Her mortal remains were brought back to Chennai for final rites.

The body of music maestro Bhavatharini’s daughter and playback vocalist will be preserved in Ilaiyaraaja’s home in Gudalur, Theni. Friends and relatives are expected to pay homage to her at his house, the ANI reported.
Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, former AIADMK minister D Jayakumar, and DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth were among those who paid their last respects to Bhavatharini.
Actors Kamal Haasan, R Sarath Kumar, Silambarasan, Simran, Soori, and Gautham Karthik, director Selvaraghavan, and composers D Imman and Santhosh Narayanan took to social media to express their condolences over Bhavatharini’s demise.
“I don’t know what to do with my dear brother Ilayaraja. I grab his hands mentally. Pavadarini’s demise is something that cannot be tolerated or accepted. My brother Ilayaraja should not lose heart in this greatness. My heartfelt condolences to the family of Bhavadharini,” Haasan wrote on X.

Bhavatharini sang several songs composed by her father. She received the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song “Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu” from the film Bharathi (2000), composed by Ilaiyaraaja.
She is survived by her husband R Sabariraj.
