Nayanthara reacts to Annapoorani controversy

Nayanthara has finally reacted to the ongoing Annapoorani controversy.

Late on Thursday night, 18 January, the actor took to X where she shared her thoughts about the controversy.

Nayanthara posted a letter where she clarified that neither she nor her team wanted to hurt anyone’s sentiments and that they do understand the gravity of the issue.

“I am writing this note with a heavy heart and a genuine desire to address the recent turn of events concerning our film Annapoorani. Crafting Annapoorani was not just a cinematic endeavour but a heartfelt pursuit of inspiring resilience and instilling the spirit of never giving up. It aimed to mirror life’s journey, where we learn that obstacles can be overcome with sheer power,” Nayanthara’s post read.

The actor also stated that they didn’t expect the removal of a censored film, previously shown in theatres, from the OTT giant Netflix.

Further, Nayanthara asserted that Annapoorani intended to uplift and inspire and not to cause distress.

The background

Nayanthara’s 75th movie Annapoorani was recently pulled down from the OTT giant Netflix for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus.

The movie was released in theatres on 1 December and received a mixed response. However, the OTT premiere of the film faced a backlash.

The makers of Annapoorani even tendered an apology after a complaint was filed.

Tamil director Vetrimaaran and Malayalam actress Parvathy criticised the decision of the OTT platform.

Hindu sentiments hurt and Love Jihad

Days after the OTT release of Annapoorani, an FIR was filed against the makers for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus.

In his complaint, Ramesh Solanki, a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) spokesperson and former Shiva Sena leader, claimed that Annapoorani “offended the religious sentiments of Hindus”.

Based on Ramesh Solanki’s complaint, the Mumbai Police registered a case against actors Nayanthara and Jai, writer-director Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, and Punit Goenka, and Zee Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel, and Netflix India head Monika Shergill.

Following this, Annapoorani was pulled down from Netflix.

The police in Maharashtra’s Thane district registered another case against eight persons, including actor Nayanthara, over allegations that certain scenes in Annapoorani had hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, an official said on 12 January.

In his complaint to the Naya Nagar police station, the 48-year-old complainant, a resident of Mira-Bhayander, said the film also promotes “love jihad”.

Before this complaint was filed, Zee Studios issued an apology to the VHP.

The letter, dated 9 January, read that Annapoorani would be removed from the OTT platform and the objectionable content would be edited.

“We have no intentions, as co-producers of the film, to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and Brahmins community, and would like to hereby apologise for the inconvenience caused and hurt caused to the sentiments of the respective communities (sic),” the apology letter read.
