Tamil watchlist: From ‘Farhana’ to ‘Kasethan Kadavulada’, there’s something for everyone

Naga Chaitanya’s Custody to Aishwarya Rajesh’s Farhana, May is going to be an interesting month for Tamil cinema.

Here’s the list of the most-awaited films, including a crime thriller, a remake of an old Tamil classic, a romantic comedy, and a film that is already seeing calls for a ban.

Farhana

Director Nelson Venkatesan’s Farhana, featuring actress Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead, is among the most eagerly awaited films this year. 

Slotted for release on 12 May, the film piqued the interest of audiences as some Islamic organisations have already sought a ban on it.

The story revolves around Farhana, a young Muslim woman who is a mother to three children. She is forced to work in a call centre because of poverty. 

Apart from Aishwarya Rajesh, Farhana also features Selvaraghavan, Aishwarya Dutta, Jithan Ramesh, and Malayalam actress Anumol in significant roles. 

Director Nelson Venkatesan is best known for his works like Oru Naal Koothu (One Day’s Ado, 2016), and Monster (2019).

Farhana is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. Gokul Benoy is the cinematographer and Justin Prabhakaran is the music director.

Theerkadarshi

Directed by PG Mohan and LR Sundarapandi, Theerkadarshi is another much-awaited investigative crime thriller of the year.

The film, which features Sathyaraj and Ajmal in the lead roles, revolves around a whistleblower who tries to save people by alerting cops about the crimes that are to take place.

Co-directed by MR Pandiarajan, it is produced by B Sathish Kumar. G Balasubramanian is the music director. Ranjeet CK is the editor. J Laxman is the cinematographer.

The release date of Theerkadarshi is yet to be confirmed. However, sources close to the film unit, say that it will release in May.

Custody

Director Venkat Prabhu’s Telugu-Tamil bilingual film Custody, featuring Telugu star Naga Chaitanya, is among the most expected films of this year. 

The movie, which is special for several reasons, will mark Venkat Prabhu’s debut in the Telugu film industry as a director and Naga Chaitanya’s debut in the Tamil film industry as a hero.

Scheduled to hit the screens on 12 May, Custody has music by both Ilaiyaraaja and his son Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Naga Chaitanya plays a police constable in the movie. Krithi Shetty is the female lead. 

Arvind Swami, Priya Mani, Sharatkumar, Sampath Raj, Premji Amaren, Vennela Kishore, and Premi Vishwanath are essaying significant roles in this action entertainer.

Good Night

Actor Manikandan, who shot to fame with the critically acclaimed courtroom thriller Jai Bhim (2021), will next be seen in Good Night. This light-hearted romantic comedy will release in theatres on 12 May. 

The film is directed by Vinayak Chandrasekaran and is jointly produced by Nazareth Pasilian, Magesh Raj Pasilian, and Yuvaraj Ganesan. It has music composed by Sean Roldan.

Good Night revolves around the life of an individual named Mohan who has a snoring problem.

The film also casts Meetha Raghunath, Ramesh Thilak, Bucks, and director Balaji Shakthivel in key roles.

Kasethan Kadavulada

Kasethan Kadavulada, director Kannan’s remake of the old Tamil classic by the same name, will finally hit the big screens on 12 May. 

It may be recalled that the release of the movie has been postponed several times. Mirchi Shiva, Karunakaran, Yogi Babu, and Priya Anand are playing the lead roles.

Director Kannan, who is also the producer of the film, modified the story slightly to suit the tastes of today’s audiences.

The story is by Chithrayala Gopu and the music is by Raj Prathap.
