Tamil watchlist June 2023

Kollywood, which delivered a few critically acclaimed Tamil films in May, is back with a good number of promising ventures this June. Here is the watchlist:

Por Thozhil-The Art of War

Director Vignesh Raja’s eagerly-awaited investigative crime thriller Por Thozhil-The Art of War will release on 9 June.

In a world where fear lurks at every corner, a bright but faint-hearted rookie cop finds himself faced with his greatest challenge yet. To succeed in his very first assignment, he must join forces with a hostile and reclusive senior cop.

Together, they must overcome their differences and confront their deepest fears as they hunt down a ruthless serial killer on the loose.

Starring Ashok Selvan, Sarath Kumar and Nikhila Vimal, Por Thozhil is produced by Applause Entertainment in association with E4 Experiments and Eprius Studio.

The teaser of Por Thozhil-The Art of War gives the impression that this one would be an edge-of-the-seat thriller. It promises a suspenseful narrative and some intense performances. Definitely, one Tamil film to watch out for this June.

Director Muthaiya’s Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam, which is a proper commercial entertainer set in a rural backdrop, is another Tamil movie that fans and film buffs are looking forward to watch this June.

The film, slated for release on 2 June, features Arya and Siddhi Idnani in the lead.

Prabhu, Bhagyaraj, Singampuli, Naren, Tamizh, Madhusudhana Rao, Avinash, and RK Vijay Murugan will appear in significant roles in this rural entertainer that promises to be an action extravaganza.

Muthaiya has a penchant for making commercial entertainers that underline the significance of relationships. He says that he’s made a film that will, for the first time, not focus on relationships but try to highlight the importance of gratitude.

The trailer of Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam gives the impression that it also looks to promote religious harmony.

Maamannan

Director Mari Selvaraj, who gave two critically acclaimed back-to-back blockbusters — Pariyaerum Perumal and Karnan — seems to have in store for his fans another gritty, intense film featuring Udhayanidhi Stalin, Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil and Keerthy Suresh in the lead.

Although the date of release has not been finalised, sources in the industry say that Maamannan (King of Kings) is likely to hit screens in the third week of June this year.

It has music by AR Rahman and promises to be yet another hard-hitting action drama.

The cinematography for the film is by Theni Eswar. Interestingly, comedian Vadivelu has sung a song for this film.

Director Sundar C, who played the lead in the superhit film Thalainagaram (2006), returns as Rightu in Thalainagaram 2. The Tamil venture promises to be equally grim and bloody.

While Thalainagaram was directed by Suraj.  Thalainagaram 2 has been directed by VZ Dhorai, who enjoys the confidence of Sundar C.

Thalainagaram was made on a low budget but went on to emerge as a super hit. The makers of Thalainagaram 2 seem to be hoping to repeat that feat.

The film, which features Palak Lalwani as the female lead, has music by Ghibran.

Although the date of release is yet to be finalised, sources in the industry say that Thalainagaram 2 would mostly release this month.
