The director assisted Ram Gopal Varma in two films and worked with filmmaker Puri Jagannadh for seven years.
Telugu film writers, of late, are coming up with interesting concepts.
A case in the point is Slum Dog Husband directed by debutant AR Sreedhar who earlier assisted renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in two films and worked with director Puri Jagannadh for seven years.
Sreedhar’s debut film Slum Dog Husband is about a slum-dweller named Laxman aka Lacchi (played by actor Brahmaji’s son Sanjay Rao) who marries a trained dog due to unavoidable circumstances.
Prior to this, Sreedhar was armed with a PhD from the USA. However, after long interactions with Ram Gopal Varma on the latter’s blog, he quit his job.
For the love of cinema and with zero knowledge, he went straight to Mumbai to RGV’s sets and became a part of Bollywood.
Nevertheless, two years later, his heart started longing for Telugu films. He then worked for director Puri Jagannadh for seven long years.
“I also pitched my stories to many producers but in vain. One day, I was thinking about Puri Jagannadh’s love for dogs. And thus, the idea for Slum Dog Husband germinated. It is a satirical movie with emotions,” AR Sreedhar told South First.
Superstitions, loyalty, and divorce are the three important elements of Slum Dog Husband.
In the flick, protagonist Laxman initially doesn’t believe in astrologers and horoscopes but is led to believe that it’s the only option for his ride to fame and success. Hit by nightmares and hallucinations, he marries a dog named Baby.
When asked why he picked a dog, Sreedhar replied, “Even former Miss World Aishwarya Rai had to give in to sentiments and marry a tree before getting hitched to Abhishek Bachchan. Here, Laxman loves Monica. But they have horoscope defects and are advised to marry a dog first.”
The twist in the tale comes when Laxman is about to marry Monica and cops enter the scene. The police raise serious objections as the dog’s owner files a case against Laxman for trying to marry Monica without divorcing his dog. He also seeks alimony for the canine!
In the journey of the court proceedings, Laxman learns the true meaning of life and establishes a bond with the dog.
But why marry a trained dog and not a slumdog? “Well, our hero is advised that marrying a dog of a good breed is more beneficial rather than marrying one from a slum that begets diseases,” Sreedhar said, with a smirk.
About the dog, AR Sreedhar recalled, “It is a trained dog from Commando Kennels in Medchal. Despite the training, it would run here and there on the sets. The trainer had a tough time making it look into the camera. We had to show patience though.”
He added, “All said and done, the shooting schedule with the dog was fun. We had to give it some time to relax and not make it overwork. We’re planning to release a video of the same.”
Bheems Cecilio scored the music for the film. The retro song “Hey mera chota dil lutgaya monika..” and the “Lacchi gani pelli..” song are being widely appreciated.
Cinematographer Srinivas Reddy is a newcomer.
“I’m thrilled that my childhood dream of directing a film came true,” AR Sreedhar signed off.
Slum Dog Husband is running in theatres.
