Quality of Tollywood films being effected due to corporate setup

Telugu cinema is not immune to changes and trends that are usually borrowed from other fields. But, of late, the corporate set-up seems to have an unseen influence on a few players.

Producer TG Vishwa Prasad of People Media Factory, who has earned both goodwill and a reputation in the field with just 25 films, seems to have a fairly good grip on the dynamics of the movie business.

His vision of producing films out of pulp stories, in a factory model, is raising eyebrows.

Does such a set-up affect the quality of the films in the Telugu cinema which is otherwise known for churning too much content with a low success rate? Does anyone care about the quality?

Trivikram and Thaman criticised

Despite the mixed reception at the box office, Pawan Kalyan’s Bro prompted its makers to blow their trumpets, thanks to the fan-dependent collections it generated and for the buzz it created.

But this Telugu remake of the Tamil flick Vinodhaya Sitham is likely to have a cascading effect on the industry.

Trivikram, who is known for his crafty dialogues and storylines, has not been taken well by Pawan Kalyan fans. He was trolled for silly dialogues and screenplay in Bro.

S Thaman, too, received his share on the internet for his poor output in the film, which banks entirely on Kalyan’s chartbusters from earlier movies.

Further, the topic on social media shifted to the hefty remuneration that Trivikram received from People Media Factory.

It is reported in the media that Trivkram was lured for a whopping ₹25 crore. Vishwa Prasad denied it in many interviews though. But Trivikram’s brand value has taken a beating after the film. So has Thaman’s.

Producer Vishwa Prasad, a software professional-turned-film producer, is neither bothered with budget overruns nor is he too cautious in spending — be it on the remuneration of the stars or the over-the-top promotional activity.

As Tollywood is gradually witnessing a content explosion, production houses don’t actually have to hunt for talent. This is where the renowned producer likes to cash in — new and hungry faces who keep pitching their ideas.

Vishwa Prasad kept boasting that he would make a record for the fastest 100 films in the near future. With such a corporate set-up in place, the focus on producing quality films would certainly go for a toss.

Further, with big corporations like Sony Pictures and Zee entering the space, the trend of movie-making is likely to witness a sea change.

Sony Pictures International Productions financed the movie Major starring Adivi Sesh.

Zee Studios recently funded Samuthirakani-starrer Vimanam. And it also invested in Pawan Kalyan-starrer Bro. With so much capital coming into Tollywood, the trend does seem to be changing.
