Actor Shah Rukh Khan, who is hailed worldwide as a Global Star, says the title means nothing to him and what matters to him more is learning from great talent like they have in his upcoming film Jawan.

Addressing a pre-release event in Chennai on Wednesday, 30 August, Shah Rukh Khan noted, “People talk lovely things about me. I am called a Global Star and a big star. All that means nothing to me.”

He explained, “To me, what I learn from great talent like we have in Jawan means everything. So, thank you all. From the youngest one which is Anirudh, to the eldest one, thank you for allowing me to learn so much from the film.”

The Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan wanted to tell everyone from the Tamil film industry who worked for Jawan that he came to Chennai to learn from them.

“I want to learn and present it in front of all the Tamilians so you can appreciate what team Jawan taught me,” he said to a roaring audience.

Earlier, the actor began his speech by recalling how he fell in love with Tamil cinema.

“Very early on, I understood that some of the finest films come from Tamil Nadu. I was lucky to make two friends from this industry — Mani Ratnam and Santosh Sivan.”

He recalled, “When I came down here and shot Dil Se (1998), which was my first experience of a Tamil film, I got to know the wonderful Mr Kamal Haasan. I worked with him and for him in Hey Ram (2000).”

The Bollywood Badshah further added, “And that was the first and the last time that I ever spoke in Tamil because I spoke Tamil in Hey Ram. And then, the greatest of them all became my friend by coming over one night and doing one shot for my film Ra. One (2011) — Rajinikanth sir.”

How did Jawan happen?

Watching his friends in the Tamil film industry from afar, the Jawan star Shah Rukh Khan said that he always wondered if there was something that he could learn from the Tamil film industry.

“So, I spoke to Alif and asked him to arrange a meeting with Atlee after Raja Rani (2013). We got together. Priya (Atlee’s wife) came over. They are such a beautiful couple.”

“There was a whole new production while we were making Jawan for three-and-a-half years. They produced their own little beautiful baby (Neel). Congratulations to them,” he said.

The actor also chose to recount all the friends and family he made over the last three years.

On Anirudh

Shah Rukh Khan also disclosed how music composer Anirudh came on board.

“There’s this little baby who I think of as my own son. That’s music director Anirudh. He’s telling me that he will miss my calls. I hope that he doesn’t graduate so, so much into the Hindi film industry that he doesn’t take my calls. I’ll miss you, my son!”

He noted: “When Atlee sir told me there’s this young kid and wondered if we could do one song in the Tamil version and the Hindi versions, I said, ‘No, we have to do all the songs with only Anirudh’. He has put in so much hard work and I thank him for that.”

The actor also mentioned the (Tamil) titles given to the unit members.

“If I have to praise Atlee in Tamil; I call him ‘Marana Mass’. Cinematographer Vishnu, a wonderful human being, did outstanding work in Jawan. He is Olimayamaana Vishnu. We call the art director Muthuraj as ‘Gambeeramana Muthuraj’. Our editor Reuban is ‘Viruvirupaana Reuban’. I call Nayanthara ‘Vaseegaramana Nayanthara’.”

Shah Rukh described Vijay Sethupathi as “Attagaasamana Vijay Sethupathi” and took time to describe how much he loved Sethupathi.

“I first met him in Melbourne and then again in Chennai at Nayantharaji’s wedding. There we decided to work together. I cannot tell you how much I have learnt from you,” the Bollywood star told Sethupathi, who plays the villain in Jawan.

The actor also thanked five actresses who had been a part of his film. “I thank Priyamani who has been trying to teach me dance since the ‘1234‘ song and I still haven’t learnt.”

“Sachita, Lehar, Alia, Girija, and Nidhi have been so wonderful, waiting on the sets for me to do prosthetics and the looks. I want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart,” he added.

He stated that his unit from Mumbai learnt a lot from Jawan and hoped that the Tamil audience would own them (team) up.

Shah Rukh chose to end his speech on a light note.

“The best thing apart from the talent is you have fed me well. I’ve lost my six-pack. I have a paunch because the food here in Tamil Nadu is the nicest!”
