It was a surprise for a few onlookers at the busy RTC ‘X’ Roads in Telangana’s Hyderabad as they spotted filmgoers going crazy over old classics.

Actor Suriya’s cult blockbuster Surya S/o Krishnan (2008) was rereleased in theatres on 4 August. Well, the film isn’t old for movie lovers who savour bits and pieces on YouTube or an OTT platform. But, the classic blockbuster pushed them all into a tizzy.

Social media went agog with short videos showing fans dancing to those classic numbers composed by music director Harris Jayaraj.

With word of mouth, seats kept filling fast in theatres as the 4K version earned good bucks for producers and exhibitors.

Well, the recently-released Telugu flicks Bro and Baby lost steam in the process.

Surya S/o Krishnan, which was released in erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh some 15 years ago, was a smashing hit. This Gautam Vasudev Menon directorial earned massive revenues as it went on to become a cult hit in the career of Suriya.

And fans couldn’t get another occasion to celebrate the classic once again.

Vaaranam Aayiram, dubbed in Telugu as Surya S/o Krishnan, featured Suriya in a dual role — as father and son. Further, it starred Sameera Reddy, Simran, and Divya Spandana in significant roles.

The chartbusters composed by Harris Jayaraj were a raging hit. According to reports, the 4K version collected ₹3.5 crore in the two Telugu States alone.

Meanwhile, Mahesh Babu’s Businessman (2012) is getting rereleased on Wednesday (9 August). Even as it is bracing up to hit the marquee, the 4K version created a record after the advance collections in Hyderabad alone fetched ₹1.5 crore.

Directed by Puri Jagannadh, Businessman was a landmark film for Superstar Mahesh Babu and also filmmaker Puri.

Mahesh Babu’s mass look, screen presence, and intense performance earned him a cult stardom. The movie also earned the makers massive record collections a decade back.

The trend of rereleasing blockbuster hits of star actors in theatres is bringing fortunes to exhibitors and producers.

But there’s criticism too on social media that fans are compelled to watch the classics due to the poor content in the Telugu film industry. However, some netizens express satisfaction over getting the chance to reminisce about their onscreen idols on the big screen one more time.
