After making a splash in the fashion world and with a couple of films in Bollywood, Gayatri Bhardwaj has set foot in Tollywood.

She plays an unfamiliar character in the upcoming movie Tiger Nageswara Rao starring Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja and directed by Vamsee.

Though she hails from Delhi, the former Femina Miss India 2018 says she grew up watching films of Telugu stars as a young girl.

“I heard the name of Ravi Teja as his popular films used to get dubbed in Hindi. Only after RRR (2022), I have come to know the contribution of Telugu cinema. I am a big fan of Ram Charan. It’s a moment for me to have a debut in Tollywood. Getting an Oscar has put Telugu cinema on the top,” Gayatri Bhardwaj told the media, at a pre-release event in Hyderabad recently.

Tryst with acting

Gayatri Bhardwaj’s father is a pilot and her mother is a psychologist.

Her tryst with the fashion world happened when she was just seven. And fascination for cinema happened unknowingly for the actress.

“I may have done small films in Bollywood, but in Telugu, stars are admired so much for their larger-than-life image. The respect they get for their craft and art is so special,” she observed.

Though she got an offer in Telugu much before, the project got shelved due to unknown reasons. “Sometimes you have to wait for the right opportunity. When I got a call from the production house, I immediately accepted the project after knowing that I was starring alongside Ravi Teja garu.”

“Director Vamsee narrated my character for three hours. I got emotional after the narration. Later, I learned that 60 female actors auditioned for the role. It’s not easy to get selected from the huge list. I was told that the makers picked me for Tiger Nageswara Rao because of my eyes,” she blushed.

In Tiger Nageswara Rao, the former Femina Miss India plays the role of a village belle named Mani.

“It was quite a challenging task to play a village girl because I was brought up in Delhi. Director Vamsee and my co-star Ravi Teja garu have taken up the task of training me to get the right expressions and emotions,” she recalled.

“Working with a star like Ravi Teja is a great experience. He cracks jokes with everyone on the sets. He is such fun. Only after working on the film, I came to know the real-life story of Nageswara Rao. The real-life thief had left an imprint even in Delhi during those times,” Gayatri Bhardwaj added.

Tiger Nageswara Rao

The dialogues for Tiger Nageswara Rao are penned by Srikanth Vissa. R Madhiw cranked the camera. GV Prakash Kumar has composed the music.

Producer Abhishek Agarwal is bankrolling the film under the banner of Abhishek Agarwal Arts.

Touted to be a pan-India film, Tiger Nageswara Rao is a real-life story of Nageswara Rao — from Andhra Pradesh’s Stuartpuram area — who was involved in robberies, jewellery thefts, and bank heists during the 70s and 80s.

Though the film is inspired by a real story, it is packed with fictional elements to give the glossy look of a proper commercial potboiler.
