Nivin Pauly's Mahaveeryar celebrates second anniversary

Nivin Pauly-starrer Mahaveeryar, a fantasy drama released in 2022, is celebrating its second anniversary on Wednesday, 24 July. The movie was a box-office flop as it failed to connect with the common audience.

It was directed by Abrid Shine and produced by Nivin Pauly himself.

Penned by veteran writer M Mukundan, Mahaveeryar focused on justice for a woman. It had an interesting plot involving time travelling to a court in the 21st century from the 18th century. The proceedings gained momentum with the entry of a time-travelling monk named Apoornnananda Swamikal (played by Nivin Pauly).

Mahaveeryar was a novel concept that blended modern-day grievances, judgements, an ancient king, and the grievances of his people. The film brilliantly portrayed a courtroom drama, where the king and his ministry from the 18th century visit the modern times. The story also had a good dose of satire and raised pertinent questions.

Its major highlights included the dialogues and the way filmmaker Abrid Shine blended two different periods. Despite all these interesting factors, this experimental film based on time travel failed to hit the bull’s eye.

Interestingly, the recently released Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hrudayahariyaya Pranayakadha, which also had the elements of time travel, failed to do well in theatres. However, both films had a socially relevant story.

Nivin Pauly appeared as a sage in Mahaveeryar, while Asif Ali played a soldier. Lal drew appreciation for his king’s character, particularly for his effortless transformation from funny to serious scenes.

The other cast of the film included Lalu Alex, Siddique, Mallika Sukumaran, Sudhir Karamana, and Padmaraj Ratheesh.

Though Mahaveeryar was one of the flop films in Nivin Pauly’s career, it received critical applause for its innovative storyline.
