Senior Malayalam filmmaker Sangeeth Sivan no more

Senior filmmaker and cinematographer Sangeeth Sivan passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday, 8 May. He was 65.

Sangeeth Sivan delivered some memorable Malayalam movies like Vyooham (1990), Nirnayam (1991), and Yodha (1994). He helmed around 20 films in Malayalam and Hindi.

The Hindi film Kapkapii is his last venture and is yet to be released. It is an official remake of the Malayalam blockbuster Romancham (2023), directed by Jithu Madhavan.

About Sangeeth Sivan

Sangeeth Sivan was born into a cinema family. His father Sivan was a prominent filmmaker based in Trivandrum. His brothers Santosh Sivan and Sanjeev Sivan are also into cinema.

Sangeeth was the eldest of the three brothers.

Under the guidance of filmmaker Adithya Bhattacharya, he started his career as the executive producer of the iconic film Raakh (1988).

Sangeeth Sivan’s directorial debut Vyooham is a critically acclaimed film. It was headlined by Raghuvaran and Urvashi.

Yodha, featuring Mohanlal in the lead, helped him hog the limelight. The movie was not a commercial hit though.

Interestingly, many years later, Yodha was declared a cult movie. Sangeeth was surprised by the rousing reception the movie received several years after its theatrical release.

The director teamed up with Mohanlal again for Gandharvam (1993) and Nirnayam (1995).

His 1993 film Johnny bagged the Best Children’s Movie Award at the Kerala State Film Awards.

Sangeeth Sivan debuted in Bollywood with Sunny Deol’s Zor (1998). Later, he helmed Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne (2003), Kyaa Kool Hain Hum (2005), Apna Sapna Money Money (2006), Ek-The Power of One (2009), Click (2010), and Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (2013).

Though he didn’t have much success in Hindi, interestingly, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, an action comedy film starring the Deol family, was a super hit.

Sangeeth Sivan also debuted in the OTT space with the TV series Bhram (2019).
