Rape case filed against director Omar Lulu

Malayalam director Omar Lulu is in trouble. A young actor filed a rape case against the filmmaker.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that Omar sexually assaulted her multiple times after promising roles in his films.

The Ernakulam Rural Police registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the case.

Omar Lulu has been charged under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code.

The actor, a resident of Kochi, initially lodged a complaint against the director with the Kochi city police. The case was later transferred to the Nedumbassery police.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that Omar Lulu raped her several times at various locations, between January and April, under the guise of friendship and offering roles in his films.

Meanwhile, Omar Lulu refuted the rape allegations made filed against him.

In a statement to a TV channel, the Malayalam director admitted that he shared a close friendship with the actor and that he visited various places with her.

However, the filmmaker claimed that their friendship ended six months ago and he had not contacted her since then.

He alleged that the woman might have filed a rape case due to personal animosity.

He also suspected the involvement of a blackmailing group behind the complaint.

Meanwhile, the Nedumbassery police are expected to question Omar Lulu in the rape case.

Previous controversies

Earlier too, Omar Lulu was involved in controversies.

Days after the release of his film Nalla Samayam (2022), he withdrew it from theatres. This came shortly after the Kerala State Excise Department booked the director for allegedly promoting the use of a banned synthetic drug in its trailer.

A case was registered against Omar Lulu and the producers of Nalla Samayam after finding that scenes and dialogues promoting the usage of MDMA (a banned drug) were included in the trailer.

The filmmaker was also a part of Bigg Boss Malayalam Season 5.

He raised eyebrows with his statement against actor Priya Warrier, who became an overnight sensation after her wink in the song “Manikya Malaraya Poovi” from Oru Adaar Love (2019).

Referring to Priya Warrier, Omar Lulu said people in the industry find it hard to handle “instant fame”.

Omar’s debut movie Happy Wedding was a success. Later, he made films like Chunkz (2017), Oru Adaar Love (2019), and Dhamaka (2020).

The filmmaker is currently shooting for his upcoming flick Bad Boys, featuring Rahman and Dhyan Sreenivasan in lead roles.
