Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is now busy preparing for the release of his directorial Empuraan, has wrapped up shooting for Vilayath Buddha.
Vilayath Buddha directed by Jayan Nambiyar was announced in 2020 and started shooting in 2022 owing to the covid-19 pandemic. The film also has Anu Mohan and Priyamvada Krishnan in prominent roles alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran.
Announcing the same, the actor-director wrote on Instagram: “2 plus years, a ruptured ACL, a torn meniscus, and some re-implanted cartilage later, #VILAYATHBUDDHA comes to a final wrap for Double Mohanan! Been a journey in more ways than one!”
During the shoot, in June 2023, Prithviraj Sukumar suffered a ligament tear while shooting a stunt sequence. He was shifted to a private hospital in Kochi where he underwent keyhole surgery.
“I had an accident while shooting an action sequence on Vilayath Buddha. Fortunately, I’m in the hands of experts who performed keyhole surgery and I’m now recouping. It’s rest and physiotherapy ahead for a couple of months,” Prithviraj, had said in a statement.
The film is the big-screen adaptation of GR Indugopan’s novel of the same name. The screenplay has been co-written by the author himself, alongside Rajesh Pinnadan.
This isn’t the first time one of Indugopan’s works has been adapted for the screen; his most recent adaptation was the film Ponman, starring Basil Joseph and Sajin Gopu.
The story of Vilayath Buddha centres on a conflict between an elderly man, Bhaskaran Master, and his former protégé, Double Mohanan, over the ownership of a prized sandalwood tree. Prithviraj plays Double Mohanan, while Shammy Thilakan portrays Bhaskaran Master.
The technical crew of Vilayath Buddha includes renowned cinematographer Arvind Kashyap, known for his work in Kantara, music director Jakes Bejoy, and editor Sreejith Sarang. The film is produced under the Urvashi Theatres banner.
