'Premalu' rules the Kerala box office this Valentine's week

Malayalam director Girish AD’s latest outing Premalu is running strong in theatres across Kerala with houseful shows.

The movie won the hearts of both critics and moviegoers.

The romantic comedy is doing good business at the Kerala box office by earning over ₹10 crore in just five days.

Jayaram’s Abraham Ozler, released in January, is the only box-office hit this year.

Abraham Ozler revived the career of Jayaram in Malayalam by collecting over ₹40 crore till now. Mammootty’s extended cameo did wonders for the movie.

Good bookings in Kerala

Starring Naslen K Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju in lead roles, Premalu is an out-and-out entertainer with a normal love story that has been executed well.

Filmmaker Priyadarshan, who watched the movie recently in Kochi, described Premalu as a movie with an entertainment value.

Priyadarshan noted that the film has realistic elements in the right proportions, including comedy, and that the new generation of filmmakers is well aware of how to pull off such stuff.

Premalu witnessed good booking across theatres on Wednesday, 14 February (Valentine’s Day).

It is expected to draw more crowds to cinema halls this Valentine’s Week and throw tough competition to the projects releasing this Friday.

A box-office hit

Premalu became a box-office hit by registering good collections.

According to the Sacnik tracking website, Girish AD’s directorial collected around ₹10 crore in India in just five days.

On Day 1, the movie earned ₹0.9 crore and on Day 2, it collected ₹1.9 crore.

On Day 3, the film earned ₹2.7 crore and on Day 4, it collected ₹1.65 crore.

On Day 5, the collection rose to ₹ 2 crore.

Premalu is likely to set the cash registers ringing this weekend as it is drawing more family audiences to the theatres.

Exhibitors also oozed confidence in the movie and are adding extra shows and extra screens.

According to trade experts, the movie collected ₹16 crore worldwide.

Meanwhile, Anweshippin Kandethum earned ₹10 crore worldwide.

Upcoming films this Valentine’s Week

The Malayalam box office will see tough competition this week as Mammootty’s Bramayugam is releasing on 15 February.

Shot in Black-and-White format, the film promises to offer a different experience to the audience.

Thund, starring Biju Menon, Marivillin Gopurangal, and Indrajith Sukumaran, will be released on 16 February.

In all, four Malayalam films will hit the theatres in Kerala this week.

Re-releases 

As part of Valentine’s Week, many old films are being re-released in multiplexes in Kochi.

Nivin Pauly’s Om Shanti Oshana (2014) and Premam (2016) have been re-released for Valentine’s Day.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Titanic, and Pyar Ka Punchnama are the other movies that are being screened in various multiplexes in Kochi.
