There is yet another clarification regarding the newly formed Progressive Filmmakers’ Association. And this time, it is from director Aashiq Abu.
In a note shared on his social media handles, the director stated that the name Progressive Filmmakers’ Association is a temporary, working name and that a different name will be given to the organisation once it is officially established.
Aashiq Abu, one of the leading names of the organisation, noted that the association and its governing body will be a representation for people from all sections of cinema—producers to those pasting posters.
Aashiq Abu noted that the leaders of the new association will be selected democratically through elections. Till then, an interim committee will look after the functioning of the Progressive Filmmakers’ Association.
Referring to the letter circulated in the news, Aashiq Abu claimed that it came out during the discussion stage of the organisation.
He clarified that the letter, circulated for general information, was unofficially released. It caused a lot of confusion since as it had the names of the people who participated in the discussion.
“The news also showed the pictures of the people named in the letter as ‘leaders’ in the yet-to-be-formed ‘organisation’. Publishing this notification because an official clarification is required at this stage,” Aashiq Abu said in the social media post.
This new note has been published in the name of directors Ashiq Abu, Rajeev Ravi, Kamal KM and Ajay Atat.
It was earlier reported that a new film collective, under the name of the Progressive Filmmakers’ Association, was formed under the leadership of Ashiq Abu, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Anjali Menon, Bineesh Chandra, and others.
However, director Lijo Jose Pellissery and producer Bineesh Chandra announced that they are not part of the organisation.
Meanwhile, filmmaker Vinayan mentioned that he received a letter regarding the new association. In his Facebook post, he said he would consider collaborating with the organisation once he sees its bylaws.
“The Progressive Filmmakers’ Association is starting as a broad platform by giving membership to not only Malayalam cinema producers, technicians and artisans but also workers and supporting artists (junior artists) who stick posters for the publicity of cinema. If this succeeds, there will be a revolutionary change among Malayalam film organisations,” Vinayan added.
He also felt that as an organisation with more transparency and morality, the new association should gain the strength to see everyone equally without any bias and to take a strong stand without fear.
“We don’t need a power group, we need a movie industry with power,” he wrote.
