Manichitrathazhu re-release date deferred to 17 August

The 1993 superhit Malayalam movie, Manichitrathazhu, featuring Mohanlal, Shobana, and Suresh Gopi in mail roles, has got its re-release date—17 August.

Earlier, the makers announced that the Fazil directorial would be re-released after 31 long years in July. However, they pushed the re-release date of Manichitrathazhu to 17 August because of Kamal Haasan-starrer Indian 2, one of the most-anticipated films of the year.

Interestingly, Mohanlal’s Devadoothan (2000), directed by Sibi Malayil, will be re-released on 26 July after a gap of 24 years.

At a press meet held in early July, the makers announced that Manichitrathazhu will be re-released with 4K picture quality and Dolby Atmos sound technology.

The film was restored with great difficulty as the analog print was lost. However, the makers managed to get a hold of the print from the film archives in Mumbai and initiated the remastering work.

Manichitrathazhu will be presented by Swargachitra and Matinee Now and distributed by E4 Entertainment.

According to producer Swargachitra Appachan, Mohanlal was initially sceptical about the restoration process.

At a promotional press meet recently, the Malayalam superstar expressed his concerns about the possibility of producing the 4K version of Manichitrathazhu. “Most of the labs that owned analog prints were closed down after the advent of digital cinema and getting the old prints was a difficult task,” he pointed out.

Nevertheless, the actor praised the efforts of the team in making the remastered 4K version a reality.

Manichitrathazhu was a superhit movie upon its release and ran for over a year in several cinema halls. It boasts an ensemble cast: Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Sobhana, Nedumdi Venu, Thilakan, Innocent, KPAC Lalitha, and Vinaya Prasad.

Mohanlal appeared as Dr Sunny, Suresh Gopi as Nakulan, and Shobana as Ganga and Nagavalli.

The film was remade into Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, and Kannada. It won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Shobana clinched the National Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Ganga/Nagavalli.
