Malayalam superstar Mammootty’s February release Bramayugam (2024), an experimental film, garnered applause from audiences and critics alike.
It is back in the news, as it became the second film in Letterboxd’s top 10 horror films of 2024 (so far). Not only did Bramayugam secure the second place, but also is the only Indian film in the top 10 list.
Bramayugam, a horror thriller, saw Malayalam superstar Mammootty playing a sorcerer. Rahul Sadhasivam’s directorial showcased the acting prowess of Mammootty earning around ₹60 crore at the global box office.
Award-winning novelist TD Ramakrishnan penned the dialogues. The film was shot entirely in Black and White, with Shehnad Jalal as the cinematographer and Shafique Mohamed Ali handling editing duties. Christo Xavier composed the music.
Bramayugam also marked the debut production of Night Shift Studios, a new banner launched by Y Not Studios specialising in horror thrillers.
The movie witnessed a good theatrical run and is now available on the OTT platform Sony Liv.
The Mammootty starrer was also featured in Letterboxd’s top 25 films of 2024, along with Laapataa Ladies, Manjummel Boys and Aattam.

Bramayugam is set in the 17th century in the South Malabar area of Kerala, in which Mammootty plays the role of a sorcerer with negative shades.
It is a different movie in Mammootty’s career spanning more than 40 years. The actor’s willingness to do negative characters at this age shows how much he loves experimenting despite his Superstar status.
Mammootty, as Kodumon Potty, delivers a stellar performance. His mannerisms, dialogue delivery, and wicked laugh give goosebump moments to the viewers.

The online platform—Letterboxd is a network for film discussion and discovery. “Use it as a diary to record and share your opinion about films as you watch them, or just to keep track of films you’ve seen in the past,” the website reads.
According to the platform the ranking is based on average Letterboxd member rating. The films considered had to fulfil the following conditions: Feature-length narrative films included only; Films must have had their first national release in any country in 2024 (no festival films); There is a 1,000 minimum rating threshold.
