L2: Empuraan on OTT

Mohanlal’s last release, L2: Empuraan, after completing a successful theatrical run, is now all set to premiere online.

The Prithviraj directorial is set to start streaming soon, making it available for a wider audience. The film will be available on Jio Hotstar from 24 April, in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.

The actor-turned-director Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial was produced by Aashirwad Productions and helmed by Antony Perumbavoor, a close associate of Mohanlal. Apart from Mohanlal, the film has Manju Warrier, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and others in lead roles.

Sharing the news, the OTT platform wrote on X: “L2: Empuraan will be streaming from 24 April only on JioHotstar.”

The makers have also officially announced the third part at the end of the film titled L3: The Beginning.

Meanwhile, the film was caught in a storm, facing criticism from right-wing groups over its political messaging. Following this, the makers of  L2: Empuraan have “voluntarily” cut or altered 24 scenes, amounting to two minutes and eight seconds. The changes include the removal of references to the 2002 Gujarat riots, the National Investigation Agency, among others.

However, producer Antony Perumbavoor, speaking to the media, said the changes were made voluntarily and not under external pressure.

Right-wing groups, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accused the film of vilifying Hindu nationalist organisations. Organiser, the RSS-affiliated publication, published articles alleging that the film depicted Hindus as aggressors during the riots.

The backlash also prompted Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, who plays the lead role, to issue a statement addressing the concerns. In a Facebook post, he expressed ‘regret’ over the controversy.
