Veteran actors Sarada and Sheela respond to Justice Hema Committee Report

Veteran actor Sarada, who was part of the three-member Justice Hema Committee that submitted a report on abuse and discrimination in Malayalam cinema, has stated that sexual harassment always existed in the film industry.

In an interview with Manorama News, Sarada mentioned that women remained silent during her time due to the lack of support and social stigma. “These issues weren’t revealed back then due to pride and fear. However, today’s educated younger generation is courageous enough to speak out about their traumatic experiences, which is a welcome change.”

Nevertheless, Sarada termed the recent revelations after the publication of the Justice Hema Committee Report just a “show”.

She felt that at this moment, everyone should focus on the landslides in Wayanad and work towards the rehabilitation of the affected.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Sheela also shared her opinion regarding the Justice Hema Committee report.

She encouraged women actors to openly share their experiences with courage. “Though I haven’t faced any sexual harassment, I have heard women on sets discussing the unfortunate incidents they experienced,” the actor said.

Sheela also noted that in the past, there were neither opportunities nor the circumstances to speak out openly. “I don’t know why the names of only certain actors are being mentioned when so many are involved. If anyone is guilty, they should be punished.”

She further acknowledged the struggles women go through while acting in movies. ” Some foray into cinema due to financial reasons, while others are driven by their love for the craft. But it is painful to see them struggle,” she observed.

Sheela also appreciated the efforts made by the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) for women in the Malayalam film industry. She praised the Kerala government for appointing the Justice Hema Committee and giving women a platform to speak out.

The government released the controversial Justice Hema Committee Report on 19 August. The report revealed that women had been facing extreme discrimination in the Malayalam film industry. It highlighted the prevalence of the casting couch and stated that women are insecure in the industry.
