In June, a science fiction mockumentary titled Gaganachari hit the screens in Kerala. The film directed by Arun Chandu soon received a tremendous response from the audience and critics alike, despite the genre being relatively new.
After about three months of release, the film is finally available for a wider audience on the OTT platform Amazon Prime Video
It is set in the 2040s against the backdrop of a dystopian model in Kerala and also showcases the alien invasion of Earth. The film was shot in Kochi during the Covid lockdown following the protocols.
The government bans petrol vehicles and mandates the use of electric vehicles since petrol has become a rarity. Further, everyone is under strict electronic surveillance.
It features the comedy events that happen in an apartment inhabited by three bachelors. Their flat becomes a refuge for an extraterrestrial female fugitive (played by Anarkali).
Aju Varghese, Gokul Suresh, Ganesh Kumar, and Anarkali Marikar’s fabulous performances and unique storytelling worked in favour of the movie. Anarkali Marikar played the alien.
In an interview with South First, Arun Chandu said Gaganachari was inspired by the American comedy horror mockumentary television series What We Do in the Shadows (2015) and Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977).
It was written by Arun Chandu and Siva Sai. The duo crafted an interesting story for the film, with a blend of science fiction and humour.
Siva Sai worked as an assistant to veteran director Priyadarshan. Gaganachari is produced under the banner of Ajith Vinayaka Films.
The cinematography is handled by Surjith S Pai. The music is composed by Shankar Sharma. The action sequences are choreographed by stunt master Phoenix Prabhu.
After the tremendous success, the makers have announced a spin-off — Maniyan Chittappan, headlined by Suresh Gopi.
Maniyan Chittappan will also be a part of Arun Chandu’s cinematic universe, which he created through Gaganachari.
On 27 June, the makers shared the first-look motion poster of Maniyan Chittappan, which introduced the titular character played by Suresh Gopi. The poster introduced Maniyan Chittappan as “a crazy mad scientist and wanderer of the cosmos”.
