The title of the new Malayalam movie Am Ah sparked curiosity, with many speculating about its theme. The makers revealed that the film centres around motherhood, and that “Am Ah” is a reference to “Amma,” meaning mother.

While the genre was initially kept under wraps, it’s now clear that the movie blends thriller elements with emotional drama.

Dileesh Pothan plays the lead role of Stephen, and the story unfolds through his character. With a runtime of nearly two hours, the film features some thrilling moments but ultimately concludes as a heartfelt emotional drama.

Synopsis

Stephen, a road contractor, arrives in a remote area of Idukki to oversee construction. The film opens with scenic views of the hilly region near Kavantha, a popular tourist spot. A key moment includes Stephen’s bus ride to the village, paired with a song sequence that draws the audience in.

As a contractor, Stephen harbours secrets, hinted at through his body language as he visits various places. His interactions with a local poet and an elderly character, played by TG Ravi, suggest there’s more to his story. By the end of the first half, suspense builds, leaving the audience eager for the second half.

The theme of motherhood becomes more prominent in the second half, focusing on Ammini Amma (Devadarshini Chetan) and her child in the village. Stephen’s investigation into their story drives the plot, uncovering a missing person case and the truth behind it. Revealing more would spoil the story.

A novel concept

The movie explores multiple themes, including surrogacy, motherhood, and an investigation. The plot touches on the emotional bonding between a mother and her baby, and the painful reality of couples abandoning their children. Written by Kaviprasad Gopinath, the script delves into these topics.

However, the execution falls short. Some intriguing scenes, particularly involving the blind poet and the elderly character, lack the depth needed to make an impact.

Once the mystery is revealed before the climax, the dramatic moments may feel unnecessary, though they fit within the story. The issue lies in appealing to an audience used to faster-paced films.

Director Thomas Sebastian has tried to create a thoughtful film, but it may not resonate with everyone.

Technical aspects

Music is a major highlight of the film, with Gopi Sundar delivering a strong background score and soundtrack. The introductory scenes are particularly effective thanks to the music, which suits the film’s genre.

The visuals are also impressive, largely due to the picturesque Idukki district. The cinematography by Anish Lal RS stands out, especially in the “Kavantha” scenes and the night shots.

Dileesh Pothan plays the lead role of Stephen, a part that suits his experience as both an actor and director. His previous roles, like in Rifle Club, have also been notable.

Devadarshini Chetan plays Ammini Amma, a key character shrouded in mystery. Her portrayal of an elderly mother adds depth to the role. Jaffer Idukki portrays the panchayat member in a typical role for him.

Other actors, including TG Ravi, Meera Vasudev, and Mala Parvathy, have small but decent roles.

Final take

Am Ah is a movie that celebrates motherhood. The movie has an investigation angle too which makes it a decent watch.
