Aap Kaise Ho? review: Dhyan Sreenivasan’s comedy entertainer works only in parts

Dhyan Sreenivasan doesn't offer anything groundbreaking in terms of writing, but the screenplay contains elements of a decent comedy film. Director Vinay Jose has done his best to make the movie enjoyable.

Rating

2.5/5

Aap Kaise Ho? — Dhyan Sreenivasan’s new movie is based on true events, specifically the real-life story of a friend of Dhyan.

The lead actor has also written this film, marking his third film as a writer, with his previous works being Love Action Drama (which he also directed) and Prakashan Parakatte, both of which were decent films.

However, the events portrayed in the film feel somewhat superficial, possibly due to the way they have been adapted for a cinematic approach. Let’s see what the movie has to offer.

Synopsis

Aap Kaise Ho? begins with Chrisy (Dhyan Sreenivasan) having a bachelor party at his flat in Kochi. His two friends, played by Jiva and Divya Darshan, join him for the celebration.

Both friends are womanizers and take advantage of the situation during the party. Later in the evening, a North Indian woman arrives at their home, and the events that unfold afterwards form the crux of the movie.

The entire plot takes place in one night, with the woman playing a significant role in the unfolding events.

Chrisy feels that the woman should be protected from a brothel, so he takes it upon himself to help her. However, he faces numerous obstacles along the way.

As he embarks on his mission, a series of events leads to him being arrested at the police station for a drunken driving case. Two corrupt police officers, KC Andrews (Aju Varghese) and Simon (Ramesh Pisharody) take advantage of the situation and blackmail Chrisy and his friends.

The scenes at the police station contain elements of humour, especially those featuring Ramesh Pisharody. However, at some point, the audience may lose interest due to the lack of strong writing. The portrayal of blackmail by corrupt police officers follows the usual pattern of tainted officials in a police station.

Aap Kaise Ho? does have its moments, particularly when Sreenivasan and Saiju Kurup make their appearances toward the climax. Sreenivasan’s portrayal of a judge, though brief, leaves an impact, and Saiju Kurup’s role as the DYSP is also one of the movie’s highlights.

Crisply written screenplay

Aap Kaise Ho? addresses a relevant theme, touching on issues like POCSO and sex work. However, the core of the story doesn’t have much depth for a feature film. That said, the movie doesn’t feel overly stretched, with a runtime of just 1 hour and 45 minutes, which is a smart way of executing the plot.

Dhyan Sreenivasan doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking in terms of writing, but the screenplay contains elements of a decent comedy film. Director Vinay Jose has done his best to make the movie enjoyable.

The songs at the beginning set the mood for a youthful film, but later, the story takes a more serious turn. Akhil George’s cinematography adds value, especially in the night scenes. However, a few more engaging scenes could have turned it into a perfect entertainer.

Performances

Aap Kaise Ho? features decent performances from the major actors. Since the story revolves around the three male characters, the female roles are not as prominent, though the actress who played the North Indian woman holds some importance.

Dhyan Sreenivasan delivers a solid performance as Chrisy, offering a subtle portrayal of his character. Jeeva and Divya Darshan, playing his friends, stand out in the comedy scenes and bring much of the humour to the film.

Ramesh Pisharody and Aju Varghese’s combination is a major highlight, with their scenes being well-written and enjoyable. As mentioned earlier, Sreenivasan and Saiju Kurup play key roles toward the climax, and their performances leave a lasting impact on an otherwise ordinary story.

Final take

Aap Kaise Ho? is touted to be a comedy entertainer lacking the punch of a good entertainer.
