Malayalam actor Kundara Johny, who shined in negative roles, no more

Malayalam actor Kundara Johny aka Johny Joseph passed away at a private hospital in Kollam on Tuesday, 17 October. He was 71.

He was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday evening after he complained of chest pain. However, he breathed his last.

Kundara Johny is survived by his wife Stella, a professor at a college in Kollam.

He acted in over 100 films. He was popular for his negative roles.

The actor was mostly seen as the henchman of the antagonist. His last release was Unni Mukundan’s Meppadiyan (2022).

Kundara Johny was only 23 years old when he debuted in movies with Nithya Vasantham (1979). In the flick, he played the role of a 55-year-old character.

Some of his noted films include Godfather (1991), Inspector Balram (1991), Aavanazhi (1986), Rajavinte Makan (1986), Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988), Kireedam (1989), Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Samooham (1993), Chenkol (1993), Aaraam Thampuran (1997), and Varnapakittu (1997).

Kundara Johny also acted in Tamil films like Vaazhkai Chakkaram (1990) and Nadigan (1990).

His popular roles

John made a mark for himself in the industry with his role as the henchman of the underworld don Nambiar in Nadodikkattu (1987). Interestingly, the character had a flavour of humour and it went down well with the Malayalam audience.

The actor was also popular for his role as Vasu in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu in 1988.

In 1989, Kundara Johny was seen as Parameshwaran in the most memorable Malayalam movie Kireedam where he played the most trusted right-hand man of Keerikadan Jose, an antagonist.

He reprised his role in the sequel — Chenkol. However, in the second part, he appears as a changed man who stands for the protagonist, Sethu.

Another important role of his was that of the policeman in Mohanlal’s Spadikam (1995). It had negative shades.
