The Madras High Court on Friday, 22 December, came down heavily on Tamil actor-producer Mansoor Ali Khan and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on him, to be paid to Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai.
The High Court, as reported by livelaw.in, also remarked that the actor approached it only to seek publicity.
The court passed the order while refusing to grant leave to Mansoor Ali Khan to file a defamation suit against the actors — Trisha Krishnan, Khushboo Sundar, and Chiranjeevi.
Mansoor Ali Khan filed an application to grant leave to file a defamation suit against the three actors while demanding a cost of ₹1 crore each from them.
Justice N Sathish Kumar, who heard the matter, remarked that it was normal for humans to react in such a manner when such derogatory comments were made against a woman, and the same did not call for filing a defamation suit.
It may be recalled that the court, on the previous occasion, observed orally that it should have been the actor Trisha approaching the court against Mansoor Ali Khan.
Mansoor Ali Khan said Trisha, Khushboo, and Chiranjeevi, without viewing the entire video of his speech, made comments that damaged his reputation.
It all began with the video clip of Mansoor Ali Khan’s interview going viral. In the clip, he made objectionable remarks about not having scenes with actor Trisha in their recent film Leo (2023).
Trisha, after the video went viral, criticised the actor for his misogynistic statements. Other star actors, including Kushboo Sundar and Chiranjeevi, supported Trisha.
The National Commission of Women intervened, directing Tamil Nadu Police to file a complaint. Mansoor Ali Khan subsequently issued an unconditional apology to Trisha, who accepted it, seemingly closing the matter.
However, Mansoor Ali Khan stated his intent to file a defamation suit against the actors for defaming him without watching the entire video. Thereafter, he approached the Madras High Court, which on Friday refused to grant him the leave and also imposed a cost on him.
