Oscar winner AR Rahman revealed that the story of director Mari Selvaraj’s Maamannan (2023), featuring Udhayanidhi Stalin and Keerthy Suresh in the lead, was actually the angst he felt about the oppression of deprived classes in society.

Participating in the 50th-day celebrations of the film, Rahman said, “This story is the angst that has been within me for the last 20-30 years as to why such things were happening. I wasn’t able to do anything (to counter it) with music, and therefore, I joined hands with someone who was countering it.”

He remarked, “Initially, I did not know that it would come out so well when Mari Selvaraj narrated the story to me. Especially, the first half which had a shade that was similar to the touch of art filmmakers whom I like.”

Rahman further added, “I think he found something original. I saw a shot with Vadivelu in it where he would look intently at Udhay as the latter rides a bike. That look had so much in it. As soon as I saw that shot, it inspired me to do so much more.”

Udhayanidhi’s last movie as an actor

Director Mari Selvaraj, who is known to make movies that shine the light on the evils of casteism, said, “Udhay sir called me to say that this was his last film. I am happy that I was able to make a film that was to his satisfaction. I thank my entire unit, which enabled me to do this.”

He added, “The song that I am singing might be an old tune. But I shall sing it all my life. I will rip up my intestines from my stomach, turn them into the ancient musical instrument Yazh, and play this tune on it. I will continue to keep searching for ears that seek the truth.”

Udhayanidhi reaffirmed his decision that this would be his last film as an actor in his career. He said both his first and last films were hits and thanked Mari Selvaraj for giving him his last hit (Maamannan).

Udhayanidhi also recollected an incident. “During the course of shooting for Maamannan, I suffered a small injury. Keerthy Suresh joked that since I had suffered an injury, the film was likely to become a big hit. When I suffered another injury some days later, she laughingly remarked that the film would become a bigger hit!”

He added, “While distributing mementoes to those who worked on the film today, I suffered another injury.”

To this, the anchor asked whether this meant that there would be another film, which would go on to become an even bigger success, Udhayanidhi replied in the negative. “No. The decision that this will be my last film as actor stands.”
