Ladies only special show Varisu

It is likely that there would be no special fan show starting from midnight this Pongal for both Vijay’s Varisu and Ajith’s Thunivu, an exhibitor told South First.

Meanwhile, the exhibitors are hosting “Ladies Only” special shows of Varisu across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.

The idea came up after Varisu was given a clean “U” certificate by the Censor Board and Thunivu was given U/A with cuts. This is the first time in the history of Tamil cinema that such an initiative is being taken up, a top office-bearer of Vijay Makkal Iyakkam told South First.

With Thunivu releasing on 11 January, Ajith’s film is releasing on a Wednesday instead of a Thursday, after a gap of 12 years!

Mankatha was released on Wednesday and it was a blockbuster and there is nothing to worry about, said the fans to appease those who are angry that the Sai Baba sentiment of their idol could not be maintained.

Meanwhile, an enterprising distributor announced that Rajavin Parvaiyile — which was released 28 years ago (1985) and the last time that Ajith and Vijay came together on screen — would be released on 6 January.

Andhra-Telangana BO influence

Past midnight on Thursday, 5 January, producers of Varisu released a poster announcing 11 January as its release date.

Even though Thunivu announced 11 January as the release date first, Ajith’s fans believe that the producers of Varisu decided the date keeping in mind the Andhra-Telangana box office, and Thunivu had to follow.

The Tamil Nadu government informally told exhibitors that permissions for midnight shows on Pongal eve would not come through, an exhibitor told South First.

Meanwhile, the police said that they cannot spare any personnel for security near theatres as most of the cops will be on bandobast duty in front of temples.

The cops cited law & order issues, thereby denying permission for midnight and early morning shows.

They expressed concern that the shows could trigger fan wars as Vijay and Ajith are clashing at the box office almost after eight years now.

Distributors and theatre owners make a killing at the special shows as the tickets are not sold online but only through bulk bookings by fan clubs.

However, the state government might give in and allow the fan shows hoping that nothing untoward happens.

Sources close to the ruling party acquired the distribution rights and it might not be easy for them to let go of the huge revenue that fan shows generate.

Multiplexes already employed private agencies to beef up security. A top leader in the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam said that the organisation members in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are gearing up to make celebrate the Varisu release and success.
