Daredevil Musthafa tax free in Karnataka

Days after the makers of the Kannada film Daredevil Musthafa urged Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to grant tax exemption, the State government on Thursday, 15 June, heeded their request and declared it tax-free in the State.

The movie is based on a short story penned by renowned writer Poornachandra Tejaswi.

“We planned to invite Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sir to watch our movie Daredevil Musthafa. Following suggestions, we also urged the government to make our film tax-free. We did so with the only intention to reach as many audiences as possible,” director Shashank Soghal told South First.

“After receiving a humungous response from both critics and cine-goers, we announced a slash in ticket prices. We charged ₹99 for multiplex cinemas, and ₹75 and ₹50 for balcony and second class in single screens respectively. This did take a toll on our profits but the move was aimed to increase the footfalls in theatres so our film reaches as many audiences as possible,” he added.

Soon after the movie was given tax exemption, the makers thanked the State government. They shared that Daredevil Musthafa already completed four weeks in theatres and this will help the film reach new audiences in the State.

“Siddaramaiah sir said he would watch the film later as he is busy with the preparations for the upcoming State budget. It was his close associates who watched Daredevil Musthafa that made him aware of the film,” the makers said.

Communal harmony

After Lucia (2013), Daredevil Musthafa is the second major film in Kannada which has been bankrolled through a crowd-funding model with more than 75 members, mostly admirers of writer Poornachandra Tejwasi, joining hands in producing this venture.

However, actor-producer Daali Dhananjay later joined hands in presenting (assisting in the release) Daredevil Musthafa.

The film which is based on a short story penned by Tejaswi in the same title from the compilation of short stories — Abachoorina Post Office, revolves around a bunch of PUC students.

Set on college premises, the comedy-drama takes a twist when the only Muslim student gets admission into the college. The makers say that the beauty of the film is that the writer propagates communal harmony in the simplest yet most effective manner.
