Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer opened to positive reviews in Kerala on Thursday, 10 August.

The theatres across the State wore a festive look as most of them hosted early morning shows. Fans of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal initiated the special shows in several areas.

Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar and Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff, too, made special appearances in the movie.

Mohanlal appeared in a never-seen-before avatar in the second half of Jailer. His beard, long hair and colourful shirts were a treat to watch for his fans.

On the performance side, the actor conceived serious scenes with a hint of comedy. His sequences with Rajinikanth were greeted by viewers with thunderous claps in cinema halls.

Both Rajinikanth and Mohanlal have good comedy timing which added more colour to their performances.

Towards the climax, Mohanlal’s swag worked well in a scene where tankers were blasted.

Netizens took to social media, after watching the first-day-first-show, to heap praises on director Nelson Dilipkumar for casting Mohanlal in the cameo role.

Some wondered why Mohanlal never got an opportunity in Malayalam movies to flaunt his swag and even criticised the Kerala filmmakers for under-utilising the actor.

A few people predicted that Mohanlal’s fanbase would now expand beyond Kerala, thanks to Jailer.

A fan wrote on Twitter: “Don’t think this man (Mohanlal) is added to the film only to make the film grand. His scenes in the film are very effective. BGM by Anirudh and presentation by Nelson. The Complete Actor – #Mohanlal. Audiences are in for a treat.”

Vinayakan an apt villain

Movie lovers in Kerala were also raving about actor Vinayakan for his terrific performance in Jailer.

He appeared as a ruthless villain named Varma and kept audiences on the edge of their seats with his intense acting. His expressions and dance moves in the Hindi song “Taal Se Taal Milaa” from the Bollywood film Taal (1999), in particular, left the viewers in theatres spellbound.

He too did a handful of comedy sequences in the film. His scenes with fellow gangsters especially evoked peals of laughter in cinema halls.

Vinayakan as Varma is definitely a memorable role for the actor who hogged the limelight for his splendid performance in the Malayalam movie Kammatipaadam (2016).
