Director Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer, featuring Tamil superstar Rajinikanth in the lead, seems to have set the box office on fire.

The action entertainer raked in a whopping ₹150 crore within just two days of its release (10 August).

Sources in the industry on Saturday, 12 August, claimed that the film’s worldwide gross collections from theatricals went past the ₹150-crore mark.

Jailer, which opened to positive reviews on 10 August, took a strong opening with the film’s overseas distributor Ayngaran International confirming that the Rajinikanth-starrer made a whopping ₹33 crore on the very first day.

Taking to social media, Ayngaran International wrote: “Elated to announce that the First Day Overseas Collection of Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer released through Ayngaran has crossed ₹33 crores, the highest in the history of the Superstar’s career. We will continue to break all records this weekend.”

Although Sun Pictures, the production house that bankrolled Jailer, didn’t reveal the numbers officially, trade experts and industry insiders say that the film got a phenomenal opening in all five Southern states as well.

Says a source, “In Tamil Nadu, Jailer collected around ₹39 crore in the first two days. In the Telugu-speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, it raked in over ₹14 crore. The film also got a strong opening in Kerala where it earned ₹18 crore.”

Japanese ambassador fida over Rajini

If the box office numbers are any indication, it’s clear that the film won the hearts of audiences worldwide.

Standing testimony to this fact is a post by the Japanese Ambassador to India, Hiroshi Suzuki. The ambassador, who posted a cute clip of himself unsuccessfully trying to imitate one of Rajinikanth’s signature style moves, said, “Vannakkam! @Rajinikanth, #Japan also loves you a lot!🤝 #Jailer #rajinifans.”

Holidays ahead

Industry pundits say that Jailer‘s outstanding run is only bound to get even better with Saturday and Sunday (12-13 August) being holidays and with Tuesday (15 August) being a holiday for Independence Day.

The Nelson directorial, apart from Rajinikanth, also features Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar, Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff, Telugu actor Sunil, Ramya Krishnan, Vinayakan, Mirna Menon, Tamannaah, Vasanth Ravi, Naga Babu, Yogi Babu, Jaffer Sadiq, and Kishore in key roles.

It has music by Anirudh and cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan.
