Director Selvaraghavan

Ace director-actor Selvaraghavan, a passionate cricket fan, broke down soon after India lost to Australia in the final of the Cricket World Cup that happened in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

The director could not hide his heartbreak.

Taking to platform X, he wrote in Tamil: “After yesterday’s loss in cricket, I kept crying. My children couldn’t understand why (I was weeping). They haven’t seen their dad cry. Poor things. Little do they know that the tears their dad shed weren’t for losing a game in cricket. The tears came because I couldn’t bear to see my country lose. I cannot explain the pain that I felt. My heart shattered.”

Selvaraghavan wasn’t the only Tamil film celebrity who was heartbroken by India’s defeat.

Well-known director Venkat Prabhu, best known for making the comedy-drama Chennai 600028 (2007) — a film based on gully cricket, posted a clip of a man shedding tears soon after India’s loss.

Also, he reposted a tweet put up by IPL franchise CSK that read: “Chin up, India! Fought like a true contender.”

Actor Shanthnu Bhagyaraj, too, expressed his disappointment at India losing the World Cup final but congratulated Australia on their brilliant win.

He wrote, “No matter how strong you’ve been, handling an important knockout game matters… India showed confidence throughout, fought brilliantly throughout.. but not every day can be your day. Congratulations Australia. Showed your champion spirit today.”
