For the first time, Varalxmi Sarathkumar is playing a cop in the Telugu movie Kotabommali PS, a remake of the Malayalam original Nayattu (2021).

Ahead of the film’s release on 24 November, the Krack (2021) star spoke to the media about her experience working on the film.

“Investigative thrillers have become a trend these days. More often, I am offered cop roles in Tamil and Malayalam movies. But, for the first time, I am playing a cop in Telugu. Right from the beginning, I always wanted to experiment with characters in Telugu. Kotabommali PS offered me that platform to reinvent myself on screen,” Varalaxmi Sarathkumar said.

Bunny Vass and Vidya Koppineedi are bankrolling Kotabommali PS under GA 2 Pictures.

Teja Marni is the director. The flick features Varalxmi as a hot-headed cop.

About Kotabommali PS

About the movie, she quipped, “Senior actor Srikanth garu is also playing a cop. Now, imagine what if one among us is a cop. The cat-and-mouse game involving me and Srikanth is amazing to watch on the screen.”

The actor explained, “How political pressure on police personnel subverts the functioning of the department are some of the key points explored in Kotabommali PS. It’s like a cat-and-mouse game between me and Srikanth in the film. What if an upright policeman turns into a violent criminal, he just goes berserk?”

Varalaxmi says her character in the Telugu remake is much more significant than the one she played in the Malayalam original Nayattu.

Kotabommali PS is not a political drama. The movie partly tries to paint a realistic picture of the present situation and how combative electoral politics destroy well-established democratic norms. But the film is not aimed at any political party. It depicts the voters’ behaviour to a small extent,” she added.

Preparation for the role

The Naandhi (2021) artiste admits that it was a challenging task for her to get under the character’s skin.

“I smoked a cigarette for the first time for the flick. It was a funny experience to pretend like I was enjoying it. But ultimately, it added discomfort after the director said, ‘Cut’,” Varalaxmi recalled.

“As an artiste, one has to submit oneself to the character. I have always been conscious about playing roles that leave a mark on the audience and those that others can’t play. I am happy to be in that space,” she asserted.

The actor says she is happy that the single “Lingidi Lingidi” is drawing much attention on social media. “All credit to the director Teja. Apart from lady-oriented roles, I am ready for any character that makes me feel unique.”

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar noted that she was satisfied with the roles that she was being offered in all the South Indian languages. “I don’t have any dream roles as such. I feel visual storytelling has the power to influence people,” she added.

The actor has a good lineup of films at the box office. “Hanuman is releasing for Sankranthi next year. I’m a part of Kichcha Sudeep’s Kannada film Max. A few more projects are in the pipeline,” she signed off.
