Kannada actor Nagabhushana, who has been booked for causing a fatal accident, said it was not a hit-and-run case as some reported since he did everything possible as a human being to save lives after the road mishap.
The actor is facing charges of reckless and negligent driving for causing a fatal accident on the night of Saturday, 30 September.
A 48-year-old woman named Prema S died in the mishap, while her husband Krishna B (58) sustained several injuries. He is undergoing treatment in a hospital.
The Kumaraswamy traffic police registered a case against Nagabhushana and later released him with a station bail.
On Monday, 9 October, Nagabhushana told the media that he did not run away after the unfortunate incident. “Soon after the accident, I did everything possible to save their lives. I was initially shocked but with the help of the passersby, I took the injured to the nearby hospital.”
He said that he informed the police about the mishap while heading to the hospital to admit the injured.
The actor added that he was in a state of shock on learning that the lady passed away and the vitals of the elderly man were being checked. “This is when the police arrived and took me to the station for further procedure.”
Sharing his version as to what followed thereafter, Nagabhushana said the police enquired as to whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
“I did not consume alcohol and they even checked it in the alcometer right in the presence of the people related to the injured. They collected my blood samples too. After completing the necessary procedures, I was released on station bail in the morning,” Nagabhushana explained.
Devastated over the incident, the actor said he too lost his father in a road mishap and that he “understands and shares the pain of the family”.
“Around two decades ago, I lost my father in a road mishap. Even today, we do not know who was responsible for the accident. The vehicle driver who caused the accident that killed my father on the day of Gowri festival was never known,” Nagabhushana said while breaking down in tears.
He added, “On every Gowri festival, I cannot but think about the tragic end of my father. I sincerely urge everyone to not panic in such situations and help the injured ones and inform the police without fail.”
As far as reaching out to the victim’s family, the actor said he is in touch with one of them and assisting both the family and the police whenever he is required as a responsible person.
The traffic police booked the actor under Sections 279, 337 and 304A of the IPC and are investigating.
