Gowli review: A classic case of a good first half that falls flat in the latter half

Srinagara Kitty returns as a solo hero after six years and is brilliant. But the film, as a whole, fails to match his performance.

  • Music: Shashank Sheshagiri
  • Runtime: 2 hours 22 minutes

One more film based on a true incident, as claimed by the filmmakers of Gowli, hits the screens today, 24 February, alongside half-a-dozen Kannada films.

It also marks the return of Sanju Weds Geetha-fame Srinagara Kitty as a solo hero after six years. Now, is it worth watching Gowli for the aforementioned reasons? Let’s dive straight into the review to find it out:

The Gowli tribe

The subject revolves around the Gowli tribal community. They herd cattle and sheep and sell milk and milk products for their livelihood.

Director Soora, who hails from the same region, claims to have picked up a true incident for the movie.

The film is about an age-old tale of a happy family of an honest man living with his wife and daughter. But their happiness is short-lived when evil enters their life and everything goes haywire.

No credit for guessing what happens in the end!

Kitty’s best ever

If there has to be a sole reason to watch Gowli, it is simply Srinagara Kitty who delivers one of his finest performances that comes in two shades.

He appears as a good guy who minds his business and lives peacefully with his wife and daughter in the first half. In the second half, he turns into a wild man who goes to any extent to save his family.

His honest portrayal of the central character, also named Gowli, is one of the few aspects which lifts the experience of the film from below-average to an average level.

Never-ending action

As mentioned, the first half is where the good things are packed beautifully. It celebrates father-daughter and husband-wife relationships with a couple of good songs to go along with.

However, all of it starts to deteriorate when Gowli’s family faces an imminent threat posed by a corrupt police officer (Sharath Lohitashwa). The cop is brutal and inhumane; he also has nexus with a gang of ruthless dacoits to top it all.

Once the action kickstarts, it continues till the end. This is the phase that tests patience, wishing for the movie to hit the climax on the double.

Verdict

Watch the film for Srinagara Kitty and the best first part unless one enjoys action and extreme violence.
