Drishyam in Malayalam and Hindi

On Tuesday night, 13 June, Malayalam film lovers were in for a surprise when the news broke that the third instalment of their favourite movie franchise — Drishyam — will be shot simultaneously in Hindi and Malayalam languages.

A news portal reported that both Hindi and Malayalam versions will be shot together so the suspense element is not revealed.

Soon, the news went viral and some netizens expressed their unhappiness over the decision of the makers. Some even remarked that “Mohanlal isn’t an honest actor”.

What’s the news about?

The news was carried by other news and entertainment websites, too, by quoting the said news portal.

The source-based news said that Abhishek Pathak, the director of Hindi Drishyam (2015), and his team of writers have cracked a basic core plot for Drishyam 3 which Jeethu Joseph and his team loved.

They have taken the idea from the team of Hindi Drishyam and are now working on developing it into a screenplay for Drishyam 3.

The news report also stated that the idea is to shoot both versions of Drishyam 3 together and release them on the same date across India.

Kerala will see the release in Malayalam with Mohanlal as George Kutty and the rest of India will see the journey of Ajay Devgn as Vijay Salgaonkar.

The report further added that after the screenplay is locked, the Telugu Drushyam (2014) producers also might join the plan of simultaneous release.

The source added that the essence of Drishyam is in its suspense, and as seen in the past, there is a segment of the audience that has already seen the version that arrives first.

“The entire team working on Drishyam is committed to delivering the finest experience to the viewers, ensuring that the surprises and twists are not spoiled. Drishyam 3 will mark the culmination of this franchise. “What could be more thrilling than experiencing the suspense and excitement without any prior knowledge of what lies ahead?”, the source was quoted as saying in the news portal.

Reacting to this, Jeethu Joseph, director of Malayalam Drishyam (2013) and Drishyam 2 (2021), clarified that the news spreading about Drishyam 3 is fake.

When asked about the news about Abhishek Pathak discussing the plot of Drishyam 3, Jeethu Joseph told South First that he also came to know about the news as he was getting calls on the same matter and that this is fake news.

“I haven’t met anybody and no discussions were held regarding Drishyam 3. I have a plan to write about Drishyam 3. But how and when it will be ready can’t be said now. I also heard that both movies (Hindi and Malayalam) will be shot simultaneously. That’s not true,” Jeethu said.

Other remakes

Drishyam was also recently decided to be made in the Korean language. It was remade in the Sinhala language as Dharmayuddhaya (2017) and in Chinese as Sheep Without a Shepherd (2019). It became the first Indian film to be remade in Mainland China.

An Indonesian remake was announced in September 2021, making it the first Indian film to be remade in Bahasa Indonesia.
