Known for having produced several blockbusters in Tamil, including director Shankar’s Gentleman (1993), producer KT Kunjumon is sort of making a comeback to the industry with Gentleman 2.

Addressing the film’s grand launch event on Saturday, 19 August, the producer announced the theme of the sequel to the blockbuster hit Gentleman everyone must strive to be a gentleman.

Interestingly, the launch event doubled up as an occasion to felicitate music director MM Keeravani.

Addressing the guests, Kunjumon remarked, “I can’t call myself a gentleman, but the theme of this film is that everybody should strive to become a gentleman. There won’t be a problem if everybody is a gentleman.”

‘Covid-19 changed everything’

Kunjumon also opened up on the hardships he faced in recent times.

“We announced Gentleman 2 before the advent of Covid-19. Four-five years passed since the announcement. I gave advances to several people but everything changed during the pandemic,” he recalled.

He revealed that the story for Gentleman 2 was first developed by him along with a director named Senthamizhan.

“The story is based on a thread that was developed during Covid days. I would give the idea, and Senthamizhan would write it.”

Kunjumon further added, “At one point, he too got affected by Covid-19. We developed a story that way. However, that story changed a lot today. We also fixed a director, a hero, and a heroine. However, we changed everyone now.”

About the movie business, the producer said, “I made movies with AR Rahman and Shankar. I also distributed over 200 films. So, I know the pulse of the audience. This is a business that has both profit and loss. Producers don’t get profits. But the hero, heroine, and technicians all get their salaries.”

He quipped, “However, I don’t want audiences who watch my film to suffer a loss. For me, they are my gurus. Only if they watch my films can I win. Therefore, I don’t give importance to big stars but give preference to upcoming artistes. My technique is to cast actors who suit the roles.”

Praises Vairamuthu and MM Keeravani

On the occasion, he also showered accolades on lyricist Vairamuthu and Oscar-winning music director MM Keeravani.

“The reason why I chose to do Gentleman 2 was MM Keeravani sir. When I approached him, he asked me to come to Hyderabad. When I went, he told me: ‘Kunjumon sir, I will do this film just for you.’ He never asked me for the story or the cast. He did not even take any advance,” Kunjumon said.

About lyricist Vairamuthu, he said, “When I offered to give an advance to Vairamuthu, the eminent lyricist told me: ‘Kunjumon sir, I don’t need an advance. I will take money from you when I need it.’ He offered to spend his own money when he came to Kochi. It brought tears to my eyes.”

Stating that he had been in the film industry for the last 40 years, the producer claimed that the Tamil film industry was like his home. “It is this place that gave me a life and it is here that I grew.”

‘Won’t falter like GV’

Kunjumon went on to assure his well-wishers that he would not falter like his Godfather GV (director Mani Ratnam’s brother).

“I will not falter. GV Sir, who was my Godfather, committed suicide because nobody supported him. Suicide is not a solution. We have to achieve. We have to overcome problems. Now, the world is waiting with bated breath for Gentleman 2 and we have reached this stage. Beyond this, I wish to treat you all to a good film,” he remarked.

Gentleman 2, which formally was launched on the occasion, is directed by A Gokul Krishna.

It features newcomer Chethan Cheenu as the male lead. Nayanthara Chakravarthy and Priyaa Lal are the female leads.

It has music by MM Keeravani and cinematography by Ajayan Vincent.
