Director Martyn Nirmal Kumar’s Deiva Machan (Divine Brother-in-law) is a light-hearted romantic comedy made with the sole purpose of entertaining family audiences.

It does not aspire to deliver any messages of significance to audiences and instead only looks to entertain.

Synopsis

Not many know that Karthi (Vemal), a youngster leading a peaceful and content life in his village, has a strange quality — his dreams invariably come true.

Every time, Saataikaaran (Vela Ramamoorthy) appears in his dream wielding a whip and riding a white horse. Every time Saataikaaran appears, he announces the death of someone close to Karthi.

Karthi loses several people close to him in this way, including his mother and his school crush. Therefore, it is no surprise that the man dreads dreaming and meeting Saataikaaran.

Life is peaceful for Karthi who is otherwise happy and content to spend time with his family — his father Parandhaman (Pandiyarajan), elder brother, younger sister Kungumathaen (Anita Sampath), and close friend Murugan (Bala Saravanan).

He only has one concern though — getting his younger sister married.

Kungumathean is deemed unlucky, primarily because of an unfortunate turn of events that happens when a prospective alliance is to visit the family. The development provides fodder for wagging tongues in the village. Soon, the girl is labelled unlucky.

It is under these circumstances that Karthi manages to find a good alliance with his sister, after great difficulty. The bridegroom, a respectable man, with a strong sense of reasoning, makes it clear that he likes Kungumathaean in their very first meeting.

Despite the ardent efforts of several groups that have vested interests in stopping the wedding, it takes place.

Karthi’s family members are delighted. However, he is worried. The reason: hours before the wedding takes place, Saataikaaran appears in his dream and warns that his sister’s husband (machan) will die within a couple of days after getting married.

Karthi decides to protect his brother-in-law at all costs. What happens next is what Deiva Machan is all about.

A laughter riot

The film has a strong contingent of comedians, starting with Pandiyarajan who plays Vemal’s dad.

Bala Saravanan (Vemal’s friend) also does a fantastic job by contributing immensely to the comedy quotient. It is his sharp one-liners and swift retorts that make the movie funny.

Vemal himself is too good at comedy and he proves it yet again in Deiva Machan. Along with Bala Saravanan, Vemal manages to provide quite a few laughs.

The film has a wafer-thin plot and not all the jokes actually work. But those that work manage to bring a smile to your face.

One other factor that works in the film’s favour is that it is a clean entertainer. There are no double-meaning jokes or indecent sequences. One can actually enjoy the flick with the entire family without having to worry about embarrassing sequences cropping up.

Verdict

Deiva Machan is one of those films that might entertain you if you are among those who aren’t too particular about logic in a plot.

It is a simple story aimed at making you laugh. To its credit, it just about manages to succeed in its mission.
