Boyfriend for Hire review: Watch it for Viswant-Malavika’s sizzling chemistry

Santosh Kambhampati’s directorial debut has a novel yet flimsy storyline; the engrossing second half saves the movie, though.

Boyfriend for Hire (Telugu)

  • Cast: Viswant Duddumpudi, Malavika Satheesan, Harshavardhan, Madhunandan and Sudarshan
  • Writer-director: Santosh Kambhampati
  • Producers: Niranjan Reddy and Venumadhav Peddi
  • Music: Gopi Sundar
  • Runtime: 2 hours 2 minutes

The film’s title, Boyfriend for Hire, caught the attention of movie buffs since its announcement, as the changing social morale and relationship issues are throwing up new challenges and dimensions.

On the other hand, it also sounded risky as it falls somewhere between novelty and obscenity.

So, does this movie deserve as much interest as the title? And does this “hired” boyfriend wins hearts?

Arjun (Viswant Duddumpudi) is a handsome youngster who is ready to be hired by girls. He is the most sought-after boyfriend, and his days and nights are all filled with dates.

Isn’t it enough to guess what he does and why the girls hire him?

Now stop right there! Before you assume anything, let’s make it clear that he is not a male escort, and neither is he there for a fling. So, why is he being hired, and what is his job?

Unconvincing flashback

An incident in Arjun’s childhood, where he gets outsmarted by his girlfriend, makes him dislike girls. His dislike grows into hatred as he grows up.

Arjun’s divorced uncle (Harshavardhan) makes life more difficult for the youngster by inculcating in him hatred towards women.

While this might be an interesting premise, the real reason for Arjun turning into a misogynist is not strong enough.

Why he becomes a “boyfriend-ready-to-be-hired”, and what role Divya (Malavika Satheesan) plays in his life form the main plot of the movie.

Engrossing second half

Debutant director Santosh Kambhampati selected an interesting story and also tried to shed light on relationship issues in a thoughtful way.

But he should have focused more on the screenplay and treatment.

While the momentum lags at some points, the way scenes unfold appear unrealistic in the first half.

Despite the shortcomings in the first half, the second half is engrossing. The actual drama unfolds here, saving the flick.

Viswant, Malavika are impressive

Young hero Viswant, who has so far appeared in a host of movies as one of the leads, became a solo hero with Boyfriend for Hire. He is handsome, and pulled off the role with ease.

Female lead Malavika Satheesan made a good pair with Viswant. She is simple but expressive. Their chemistry makes the movie watchable.

Harshavardhan, Madhunandan, Sudarshan, Raja Ravindra, and others played the supporting roles well.

Behind the scenes

Popular music director Gopi Sundar, who has to his credit many soulful hits, composed the music for this romantic comedy.

But he missed the mark this time. The music is just average. Perhaps, better music would have uplifted the otherwise dull moments in the plot.

Bala Saraswati’s cinematography is fine. Vijay Vardhan’s editing could have been crispier, as this is a lighter-vein movie.

Final take

Boyfriend for Hire is not as novel as its title, but a time-pass romantic comedy. Youth can watch it once.
