Baby vs Bro at box office

Despite heavy rain lashing several parts of the Telugu states on Monday, 24 July, audiences kept rushing to theatres in droves to watch Sai Rajesh’s directorial Baby (2023). Monday alone fetched ₹1.45 crore to the makers from all centres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Baby seems invincible at the Telugu box office, at least for the revenue it is making since its release on 14 July. Youngsters kept raving about the triangular love story and are calling it a “cult blockbuster”.

The movie even surpassed everyone’s expectations in the industry by collecting ₹70 crore in just 10 days. The dream run for its producer SKN continued last week with no big movies showing strength.

No major releases

Ashwin Babu’s Hidimbha and Ruhani Sharma’s HER: Chapter 1 could not make any impact on Baby. However, the flick is expected to reach a screeching halt with Pawan Kalyan’s much-anticipated film Bro hitting the theatres worldwide on 28 July.

At a time when Telugu films boasting big stars started fizzling out in maintaining steady growth post-weekend, Baby made a record of sorts by collecting an average of ₹2 crore a day.

Even the recent pan-India flick Adipurush starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon didn’t get the expected collections post-first weekend. But Anand Deverakonda-Vaishnavi Chaitanya’s Baby pierced into the public with word-of-mouth talk.

Meanwhile, other multi-screen and single-screen theatre owners, too, started screening Sai Rajesh’s latest outing by abandoning other films.

Bro to halt Baby‘s dream run?

Now that Baby is doing tremendously well in theatres, will Powerstar Pawan Kalyan’s Bro halt its dream run?

A remake of the Tamil movie Vinodhaya Sitham (2021) directed by Samuthirakani, Bro will be released in as many as 560 theatres in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This certainly breaks Baby’s momentum at the box office.

A theatre owner in Hyderabad, on the condition of anonymity, said, “The fate of Pawan Kalyan’s Bro will be decided on the first day itself. Since he enjoys massive stardom across the Telugu belt, the movie might earn some money for us.”

He further added, “Even if it gets below-average talk, the fans will come to theatres at least for his image and stardom. So, exhibitors would screen Bro for some time and then switch to Baby later. But if the initial box office talks of Bro is positive, there would no point in screening Baby again.”
