Adipurush memes the avengers affect collections

Looks like Adipurush is creating more of a flutter on Twitter than in theatres, thanks to the never-ending memes that are trending on the micro-blogging site.

Director Om Raut’s narrative of the Ramayana starring Prabhas has provoked reactions from those who have already watched it (for obvious reasons) and also among those who never find time to go to theatres but take an interest in tracking the drama surrounding a film.

Yes, Adipurush has caused a lot of drama post-release. A lot has been discussed, shared and trolled about the movie on the micro-blogging site.

One can more easily comprehend Adipurush’s fate from the reactions on social media than one could from reviews in the mainstream media.

Candid review

Adipurush dekkhe Gujarat ki cyclone Biparjoy’ ki dimag bhi baigan me milgaya. (After watching Adipurush, cyclone Biparjoy, too, has lost its mind and has subsided),” a lady in Deccani lingo perfectly nailed it.

Mere galli mey ek Ramleela hotha, wo Ramleela ka Ravan looks more Ravan than Saif Ali Khan, kya chindhey harkatha hain. (There’s one Ramleela in our street; that Ravan looks more Ravan than Saif Ali Khan. What sort of cheap frolics are these?),” she questioned Prabhas.

Ravan ko Virat Kohli ka woh theen line-wala-strip hairstyle chipkadiye, kya asal All India TikTok Association milke bhanaye kya ye film? (Virat Kohli’s three-line strip hairdo is glued to Ravan. Is this film made by All India Tiktok Association?),” the troller remarked.

Lifted from The Avengers and Thor

Prabhas’ Adipurush looks like it is “inspired” by everything except the Ramayan, Twitter one user pointed out.

It’s so because the netizens accused the makers of lifting the final battle sequence from iconic Hollywood flick like Marvel’s The Avengers (2012).

Ravan’s Lanka in Adipurush looked as perfect as Thor’s Asgard (Thor, 2011 from the Marvel Entertainment) realm where the iconic Avengers Assembly happened.

Undoubtedly, the most talked-about character of the Prabhas-starrer is Hanuman, thanks to his “tapori” dialogues.

Om Raut must have reimagined popular episodes from the epic in Marvel style. The Lanka and Sanjivani blocks are major highlights in the film. However, the devotional twinge took a beating when audiences mocked the “tapori” dialogues.

‘Hanuman not a God’ remark

Adding further fuel to the mass outrage, Adipurush writer Manoj Muntashir said, “Hanuman is not a God. Hanuman is considered one of the powers of bhakti for Lord Rama.”

Of course, gods are born out of heroic acts, but it is unfair for Muntashir to comment on popular religious beliefs.

But analysis apart, filmmakers are certainly free to come up with fresh versions of mythological tales. Probably from the perspectives of different characters in the epic.

And not to mention, the mood will soon shift to HanuMan, the Prashanth Varma’s directorial, which showcases Hanuman as a hero.

Whether Adipurush makers have learnt a lesson or not, it certainly serves as a cautionary tale for filmmakers who may think they can dabble/tinker with mythological tales while executing them on screen.

Public backlash affects BO collections

The public outrage against Adipurush seems to affected its box office collections.

The film earned ₹137 crore, ₹81 crore, and ₹85 crore, respectively, on 16 June, 17 June, and 18 June. However, it collected just ₹24 crore gross on Monday, 19 June. The overall collection stands at ₹375 crore gross globally.

Meanwhile, amidst the backlash surrounding Adipurush, the All Indian Cine Workers’ Association wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding an immediate ban on the epic drama. The Association also sought a ban on an OTT release in future.

It further demanded that an FIR be registered against director Om Raut and writer Manoj Muntashir for the wrong portrayal of the characters and also for the cringy dialogues that hurt the religious sentiments of people.
