As Jr NTR joins the Actor’s Branch of The Academy, take a quick look at the list of Indian invitees — new and old

Jr NTR joins actor's branch of the Academy

Telugu superstar Jr NTR has been inducted into the Actor’s Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The new member class of actors also include Ke Huy Quan, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Kerry Condon, and Rosa Salazar.

Jr NTR and his RRR co-star Ram Charan were among the 398 artistes and executives who received the invitations to join the AMPAS in June.

The key team of RRR — lyricist Chandrabose, MM Keeravaani, cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar, and production designer Sabu Cyril — was also invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

RRR won the Oscar for Best Original Song for its famous track “Naatu Naatu“.

In an Instagram post, the Academy wrote: “In the capable hands of these dedicated and gifted performers, stories transcend the confines of imagination, taking on a tangible, visceral existence that captivates viewers around the world”.

“Through their nuanced expressions, compelling gestures, and authentic portrayals, they bridge the gap between fiction and reality, allowing us to see ourselves in the struggles, joys, and triumphs of the characters they bring to life. The Academy is thrilled to welcome Ke Huy Quan, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Kerry Condon, NT Rama Rao Jr, and Rosa Salazar to the Actors Branch,” the post read.

“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership. They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and movie fans worldwide,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang.

There are more than 10,000 members in the Academy who play various roles.

Of the 2023 class, the Academy said, 40 percent are women, 34 percent belong to underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 52 percent are from 50 countries and territories outside the United States.

Karan Johar, Ram Charan, and Jr NTR are three of the many Indian artistes to join the Academy this year.

New Indian invitees

Bollywood actor Siddharth Roy Kapur, directors Mani Ratnam and Chaitanya Tamhane, music directors MM Keeravani and Chandrabose, casting director KK Senthil Kumar, and documentary maker Shaunak Sen are among the new Indian invitees this year.

Other invitees include Bela Bajaria (executive, Netflix), Rafiq Bhatia (music, Everything Everywhere All At Once), Andrij Parekh (cinematographer, The Zookeeper’s Wife), Shivani Pandya Malhotra (executive, Red Sea Film), Shivani Rawat (executive, ShivHans Pictures), Girish Balakrishnan (production and technology), Kranti Sarma (production and technology), Haresh Hingorani (visual effects, Laal Singh Chaddha and Zero), PC Sanath (visual effects, 5 Rupees and Baahubali: The Beginning).

Previous Indian invitees

In 2022, Indian actors Kajol and Suriya, directors Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas (Writing With Fire-fame), and filmmaker Reema Kagti were among the 397 members invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The artistes and executives are selected based on their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.

Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Tabu, Priyanka Chopra, and Anupam Kher were also invited by the Academy.

Filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Mrinal Sen, Manish Malhotra, Amit Rai, Anil Mehta, and Aditya Chopra were the non-actor invitees.
