Celebrated film director-actor-producer AR Murgadoss is set to direct a film for Phantom VFX, a Chennai-based visual effects company.
He is also in talks with actor Silambarasan aka Simbu for a superhero movie, on the lines of Batman. The two projects are in the pre-production stages.
ARM, as Murgadoss is known in film circles, is co-producing August 16 1947 for which shooting is underway in Tamil Nadu. It is directed by NS Ponkumar, a longtime associate of Murugadoss, and stars Gautham Karthik in the lead.
Bollywood actor Jason Shah is playing the antagonist in the film which is about a sequence of events that took place before and after the Independence of India.
It is jointly produced by Murugadoss, Om Prakash Bhatt, and Narsiram Choudhary, and co-produced by Aditya Joshi.
The teaser of the movie was released in August this year and it has already created quite a buzz in the Tamil film industry.
In fact, ARM was missing in action after his project with Thalapathy Vijay, to be produced by Sun Pictures, was shelved due to budget issues.
Incidentally, his major previous films — Mahesh Babu Spyder, Thalapthy’s Sarkar and Rajinikanth’s Darbar — failed to do a decent job at the box office. The reason being their budget overshot phenomenally and made them overpriced.
Phantom VFX is based in Chennai with branches in Hyderabad, Mumbai and the US. The visual effects company worked for Kamal Haasan–Lokesh’s Vikram and the team was honoured at the 100th-day function hosted by the production house.
The upcoming project is an animation film and will showcase the finesse of the company to the global media production house, said a source.
Meanwhile, sources close to Silambarasan said that Murugadoss narrated a subject in which the central role is of a superhero and the actor seems to have found it exciting.
He will soon work out the dates and take time from his present lineup of movies. If this project comes through, it will be the first superhero film in Tamil.
