varisu pre-release business

Pongal 2023 is a festive one indeed, with Varisu set to hit the screens on 12 January. This ₹200-crore film, as we know, will see Thalapathy Vijay romancing Rashmika Mandanna.

Thaman S scored the music for the movie, his first Vijay film ever. The first single “Ranjithame” is already a superhit and has become an earworm for many. In fact, the song got over 51 million views since its launch on 5 November.

The film will be released both in Tamil and Telugu. But the Tamil version will be released much before the Telugu version (Varasadu).

Since this is director Vamshi Paidipally’s Tamil debut, that too with a star hero, the audiences are wondering if this would be a Tamil film or more of a Telugu film.

However, the director has assured that Varisu will be an action-packed entertainer and Thalapathy Vijay’s fans and the audience are sure to be happy with it.

Meanwhile, this Dil Raju’s production venture has created quite a buzz, of late, for the pre-theatrical business it garnered.

Varisu’s pre-release business

According to numerous trade sources who are closely following the movie business, Varisu’s theatrical rights for Tamil Nadu have been sold for a whopping ₹70 crore.

The overseas rights have been bought by Phars Films for Rs ₹35 crore. The theatrical rights for Kerala and Karnataka are reported to have been sold for ₹Rs 6.5 crore and ₹Rs 7.5 crore respectively.

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Dil Raju’s Sri Venkateswara Creations is likely to distribute the film themselves.

Over the years, Vijay built his fan following in Kerala and has a strong market there now.

Meanwhile, in North India, the failure of many Hindi films has helped south films make inroads in the Hindi belt.

And thanks to this, the dubbed Hindi version of Varisu is said to have been sold for ₹32 crore to Goldmine Films.

Vijay’s previous film Beast didn’t do well. A Sun Pictures production, it was released on Sun TV, Sun Next and Netflix.

But Varisu is reported to have done a satellite business with Sun TV for a huge ₹50 crore and digital business with Amazon Prime for ₹60 crore.

This augurs well for the film and shows that it has the potential to be a super hit.

Adding to this tidy sum, the audio rights have been sold to T-Series for ₹10 crore. Thus, Varisu’s pre-release business has been put at a whopping ₹271 crore!

What’s the movie about?

Apart from the lead stars, the film has a host of actors like Khushbu, Ganesh Venkatraman, Sangeetha, Jayasudha, Yogi Babu, Sriman, Srikanth, Shaam, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Samyuktha Shanmughanathan, John Vijay, VTV Ganesh, Bharath Reddy, and Sanjana Sarathy.

It seems to follow a Telugu film template where a lot of characters are involved!

Vijay is likely to have a large family and given the title of the film Varisu, which means heir, the story would possibly revolve around a father-son relationship.

Or, Vijay may come in as the heir to take over a business since we see Vijay in a suit in some of the stills.

Of course, there will be lots of action and also romance with Rashmika since it is Vijay’s film and his fans would want it.

While the movie has been largely shot in Chennai, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, most of the action scenes have been picturised at Visakhapatnam Port.
