April watchlist: From Aishwarya Rajesh to Raghava Lawrence, Kollywood to witness special new year

Apart from the 'Puthandu' releases, the second part of Mani Ratnam's magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan' is all set to hit screens on 28 April.

Tamil releases April

This April will be special for Tamil cinema as a number of big films are all set to release for the all-important festival of thenTamil New Year.

At least five films are expected to hit screens on 14 April — Puthandu day.

These include the Arulnithi-starrer Thiruvin Kural, the Aishwarya Rajesh-starrer Soppana Sundari, actor Vijay Antony’s Tamilarasan and Raghava Lawrence’s Rudhran.

The day will also see Samantha’s pan-Indian film, Shakuntalam, hitting the screens.

This apart, one of the most awaited films of the year too is set to release in April.

Yes, the second part of director Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan is all set to hit screens on 28 April.

It may be recalled that the first part of the film, which is based on writer Kalki’s literary classic, had already emerged a blockbuster, garnering over ₹500 crore worldwide.

But first, let’s look at the releases for the Tamil New Year.

Soppana Sundari

Soppana Sundari, which features actress Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead, will also have Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli, Deepa Shankar, Karunakaran, Sathish, Redin Kingsley, Mime Gopi, and Sunil Reddy in pivotal roles.

The film, produced by Hamsini Entertainment and Huebox Studios in association with Ahimsa Entertainment, is directed by SG Charles.

Soppana Sundari — which derives its title from a famous comedy scene in Karakattakaran (1989) is about what happens when those from a low income group family win a car worth ₹10 lakh in a lucky draw.

The film promises to be an out-and-out laugh riot.

Thiruvin Kural

The latest film to join the Tamil New Year release race is director Harish Prabhu’s Thiruvin Kural.

The film is an action thriller featuring actor Arulnithi and veteran director Bharathiraja in the lead.

It has music by Sam CS and cinematography by Sinto Poduthas.

The film is produced by popular producer Subaskaran of Lyca Productions.

Tamilarasan

The makers of director Babu Yogeswaran’s Tamilarasan confirmed that the film will finally be released on Tamil New Year.

The film — the release of which has got postponed a few times at least — features actors Vijay Antony and Ramya Nambessan in lead.

It is an action thriller and has music by Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja.

Apart from Vijay Antony, the film will also feature Malayalam star Suresh Gopi and Bollywood actor Sonu Sood in important roles.

Produced by S Kowsalya Rani, the film has cinematography by RD Rajasekhar and editing by AL Ramesh and Bhuvan Srinivasan.

Rudhran

Director Kathiresan’s Rudhran — featuring actors Raghava Lawrence, Sarath Kumar and Priya Bhavani Shankar in the lead — is a revenge drama with loads of action.

The film — which is produced by the director himself — has music by National Award winner GV Prakash Kumar. However, its background score is by Sam CS.

Cinematography is by RD Rajasekar and the story is by KP Thirumaaran.

Raghava Lawrence will be seen again with actor Sarath Kumar in this film, after the phenomenal success of their earlier film together titled Kanchana (2011).

Yaanai Mugathan

Director Rejishh Midhila’s Yaanai Mugathan promises to be an entertaining take on devotion, belief systems and faith.

The film, which features Yogi Babu in the lead, also has Ramesh Thilak, Urvasi, Karunakaran, Uday Chandra and Naaga Vishaal in pivotal roles.

Produced by Rejishh Midhila and Lijo James, the film has cinematography by Karthik S Nair and music by Bharath Sankar.

Ponniyin Selvan 2

The second part of the brilliant story that is based on the early life of prince Arul Mozhi Varman — who later went on to be known as the great Raja Raja Chozhan — promises to be even more exiciting than the first, with queen Nandini plotting the death of prince Aditya Karikalan.

Simultaneously, news begins doing the rounds that the second prince Arul Mozhi Varman has drowned. In the midst of all these developments, Maduranthaka Devar stakes his claim to the throne of the Chola empire. What happens next is what the second part will be about.

Called by Mani Ratnam as his dream project, the film features a host of top stars including actors Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Jayaram, Parthiban, Lal, Vikram Prabhu and Prakash Raj.

The film is to hit screens on 28 April this year.
